Charles KenNedy the Ex liberal democrat MP,WAS found dead at his home this morning.
-
He had his personal problems, but always came over as a thoroughly decent honest bloke.
-
Our MP for 32 years.
Coincidently I was talking to him at his last political meeting just before the election.
A thoroughly decent principled man.
He will be very much missed by all who knew him.
-
A man who spoke his mind unlike so many of the bland breed we have these days - such a great shame.
-
A very sad loss.
And the media that made a lot of money pulling his personal life and problems
apart will make a lot more money probing his premature death.
I find that perverse and disgusting.
He was a fine man. RIP.
-
We really liked Charlie Kennedy. He was a very good Politician and a very nice man. He had his personal problems, which, the press always seem to play on.
He will be missed. :'(

And you will probably be among the first to read about it. Pious nonsense.

Charles Kennedy, a fine politician and man, RIP.
-
It is my sincerest wish that this thread pays tribute to a fine human being rather than developes into a slagging match between members :(
-
Well said Highlander ...RESPECT
-
There was a lovely triibute to him on Scottish televison this evening which we watched from our place in Calis. So glad we did not miss it. He was a man that people of every political persuasion liked and this programme really show just what a lovely person he was. So very sad, he was only 55 years old and leaves a 10 year old son.

If anything ever demonstrated the measure of two men then this is surely it is this

Salmond should hang his head in shame

Is it possible that the news of Charles' death has become more shocking as the day has gone on.
Such a lovely, unassuming gentleman and such a terrible loss.
Sincere condolences to his family.
R.I.P

So the resignation of a corrupt football administrator is more important than the death of a leading Uk politician
DISGUSTING from the BBC !!!!!!!!

I share your disgust H but I have been surprised by some seemingly genuine
tributes from some unexpected quarters. Alastair Campbell gave a touching
interview about his longtime close friendship with Charles and was obviously
upset. It's clear he was widely respected.
-
Kevin3 - I believe that Alistair Campbell's tribute along with the many others was totally genuine.
We have lost a very good man.
-
The Nationalist newspaper's headline today read "He died without an enemy in the world"
A fine epitaph for anyone but surely a remarkable one for a politician.
Lots of folk up here still in shock and deeply saddened. :(
-
Understand that H. He was the sort of politician you would have voted for whatever his political persuasion as you would have wanted him as your M.P. As you would have known he would have worked hard for you and you could depend on him. ;)
-
On accepting the lose of his seat he said.....
"The greatest privilege of my public life over these past 32 years has to be being entrusted with the responsibility of representing this constituency.
'That is thanks to a generation and more of voters who have extended that trust to me and I hope, looking back over those 32 years, they will feel that it was trust well placed.'
For me it most certainly was.
-
I can't think of many politicians/MPs who held their own and seemed to have the respect of the HIGNFY regulars - it is a great loss for politics at a time when the very thing they needed was more Charles Kennedys.
Any news on how he died? Not that it matters much, I just hope he didn't do anything silly, perhaps thinking that the very people he gave 32 years of strong and loyal service to had rejected his work and effort.
Which they did.
-
No news on how he died that I know of.
I think that suicide has been ruled out. I would be very surprised that a man of such strong character would choose that option. I sincerely hope not.
And you are right regarding rejection. If the voters of Ross, Cromarty & Skye had shown the same conviction that he showed throughout his career he would surely have still been the MP for this constituency. But everyone is entitled to vote for whoever they wish. Charles would have had it no other way.
I didn't "know" Charles Kennedy. I shared a few tables at Black-Tie dinners with him, indeed he was my previous company's special guest when we sponsored a big dinner some years ago.
But, on a personal level I am glad that I had the opportunity to thank him for his 32 years service to my part of the world.
I did also say that whatever he found himself doing the Friday morning after the election that it was a success.
Sadly, it was not to be. :(

Nice touch from HIGNFY.
Just shows how universally Charles was liked.
