Two burglaries here in Foca Calis, they took place yesterday evening and around one o'clock this morning. The early evening break-in was when people were out, and took place around 9pm, and the early hours break-in the person was in. So please take nothing for granted, keep the villa/apartment and your belongings as secure as possible at all times. Don't give the toe-rags the chance to get in, and report people who look suspicious, or hanging around or indeed delivering or selling stuff. And look out for those you see driving about your area a number of times, take their number and let the Polis know.

Get yourself some of these, they are stick on and really easy to install (maximum 10 second job) they are great for doors, windows, mosi screens etc. as soon as someone opens your door, window or screen, they emit a loud alarm.
I bought ours in the big hardware shop next door to Melisa in Gunlukbasi, they are 2.50tl each, surely a good investment.
-
They are really great George. We use them to and they are brilliant. Cheap to replace when the battery runs out in fact the last time I brought some I found a 6 pack and they only cost me 10 TL. I must say living out in the sticks if
I see a stranger about I open the door with the alarm still on just to let them know not to bother.

We've bought a few of this type of alarm here in the UK for my mum, 91 and now on her own since dad died last year. They are great and so cheap, even over here, the alarm is really loud and would certainly alert you to anyone opening doors/windows if you are in the house or sat outside. Well worth the cost.

Overheard a lady on the dolmus on Tuesday who was burgled in Ovacik the night before, while they were all asleep, a family on holiday.
Another passenger said they had heard there was a lot of crime in the Fethiye area.
Possibly another reason for falling tourist numbers.
We have an alarm which comprises several sensors and has several hours battery back up which we bought in the UK.
Horrible that this is happening, and I would guess with a poor tourist season there will be many more sadly.

I think that one problem and a big one is...The people who rent out Villas will put lavish adverts on websites about how wonderful their Villas are, but they have no security measures in place. Anything taken that is not in a safe ( and a lot of the rentals do not have safes) is not covered.
There is a Forum for Kalkan on T.A and most of the posters and the Destination Expert for this Forum have Villas it is like an old boys club. The D.E. who is called FAED has a Villa that sleeps 10 people and when asked about security, he advised renters to find unusual hiding places in the villa for their valuables...you could not make this up. :)

Dizzy Jan, great tip about letting people hear the alarm, we also have a house alarm and occasionally we forget (on purpose) to disarm it when we come home, I don't think it's a bad thing to remind people that we have some serious security in place.
-
Do most hardware shops sell these type of alarms there? I want to purchase some for sure, but not certain where that shop is exactly.
Thank you

The only problem I have found with the ones shown here by Rimms is that both the sounder unit & the magnetic contact have to touch, or almost, & this is not possible on most styles of double glazed windows as the frame is not flush with the opener.
I have fitted them to both sides of our 'French Doors' but they have to overhang the mid joint to be close enough to stop the alarm sounding when closed.
When I was in the UK recently I went into B & Q and found similar units to those shown here, but one piece only, no magnetic contact, you stick them directly on the glass and they work by vibration sensors.
They seem to work well as my wife will attest each time she opens the windows & forgets to disarm them :-[
They are not cheap but there again neither is replacing all of your stolen goods etc. 8)

B.&.Q in Fethiye have a range of alarms for sale.
We brought ours from the U.K. It fits on the wall and anyone breaking the beam the alarm sounds. It is very loud.
-
For the uninitiated, it's actually called Homeprof, affectionately known by ExPats as B & Q
-
Thank you everyone, once again most valuable information, much appreciated.
I shall take a look in Homeprof and see what they have.
Does anyone know if the DIY shop on the market road, opposite Cafe Pazar, sells them?
Thank you

Thank you for that info, i will take a look when i get there.

If you want to do it professionally, there are Security Companies out here, who will come and fit a system to your home.

Our friends had a safe delivered, a day later her apartment was broken into on the second floor,
safe tipped over balcony and gone.
-
Depends on the safe. Ours took four men to carry in and they where all blue in the face. Also, if you have valuables in the safe and your safe is robbed you are covered by insurance.
-
When my safe was fitted it was drilled so far into the floor, I believe my downstairs neighbours use the other end of the screw to hang plants on ;)
-
I know your covered by insurance Jacqui, but that don't help when a lot of sentimental things have gone,
and a safe that took 4 men to lift in, could be carried out by 4 men,
-
No place is burglar proof, however, the four men would have to get passed my security system first. Even then they would have a big problem, will not go into that. Lastly, my neighbour has three dogs and they are the best watchdogs ever.
-
Your security system Jacqui, you,re not going to talk to them in scouse are you, that would frighten anyone away, and 3 watchdogs, they cant be that good, you get back in every night. please note the smileys Jacqui, love you really. ;) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
-
The dogs are in my neighbours villa gardens and bark at anyone in the vicinity, which can only be a good thing. :)
