Know it is not Calis, but it is close by.
Went yesterday, to the Kargi Museum for breakfast with Jim and Helen Fraser, never been before, but would highly recommend it. Fabulous big breakfast, with more helpings being put out all the time. Lovely setting for a restaurant. We also visited the Sausage man just down the road from the place.
Different world today back at home and raining!!! Will be back for another breakfast in September.

Lovely photo, a terrific spread! Always want to go there but there's never time :D

After getting the promise for this at the 3cs auction will be taking the grandchildren in august .
We drove there and stopped off a couple of weeks ago and were invited IN to have a look around. we were then served tea and fruit a lovely place and staff.

I will never give this place any of my custom after the appalling way they neglected their donkeys which thanks to the efforts of Animal Aid were relocated to Nif. What makes it worse is that their donkeys are still neglected. Ask to see them next time you visit and make your own mind up.
-
There are no donkey's there as far as we could see. We were told that they had been given away to someone who knows how to look after them properly. It was explained to us that he got the donkeys and did not know how to look after them, it was ignorance on his part.
I saw his poultry and as an ex poultry keeper myself, I thought they all seemed to be well looked after, well feed and some of the best poultry I had seen in the area.

That was the excuse they trotted out the first time round but it didn't stop them keeping more donkeys so that they could make profit by selling their milk and it has been documented on other Fethiye forums that these donkeys are also kept in appalling conditions. You,in fact asked the question on this forum about their welfare at the beginning of the year, so it was obviously a concern for you.
As for poultry keeping and donkey keeping.....there's a vast amount of difference.
-
I did ask the question, which is why I asked it again this year. We did take a look around the place and saw no donkeys and no milk was for sale.
I agree keeping donkeys and keepoing poultry is totally different however poultry and donkeys are all animals and living creatures that still need care and attention I have seen some terrible thin looking chickens around the area, with signs of illnesses inherent in poultry. The ones at Kargi are the best I have seen, well feed and well looked after. They reminded me of the ones we used to keep.
I thnk you must be an animal lover, so if you are concerned, please go up and ask, as I did and have a look around for yourself. ;) They will let you look around, you don't have to buy anything.

No doubt you mean well, but I find you incredibly patronising. Yes, I am an animal lover....

How are they still being neglected if there aren't any there?
-
Haven't been back since we worked with animal aid to move the poor souls about 3 years ago.
He promised not to get any more, last I heard there's 7 and the babies aren't getting the milk which is being sold as a cancer cure for 80tl a litre.
HAYTAP have been recently been informed, and said they would go along and see what's going on.
If anyone goes there please could they go right around the back and report back as to whether they're still there please, I don't want Haytap having a wasted journey, thanks.

CleopatraAsp. You are an animal lover, you are concerned, you live in the area.
Shouldn't you be investigating for yourself, for the animals sake, and perhaps reporting
your findings on this Forum instead of insulting others that are reporting their findings.??
-
Kevin3. Where is the insult?
-
Jacqui has made a recommendation for a restaurant, if you have any issue with the place don't go. I personally think this is the best breakfast in the area. When I go again I will go for breakfast not to check on animals. When I shop in Primark and places like that I don't ask how old the kids are working in the sweat shops are.
-
In our view this is a good traditional old family, yes past deeds were not acceptable but don't condemn them out of hand ! Go look ask about your concerns then if you are happy eat one of the very best and traditional Yoruk kahvalti you can find! If you are not happy tell Enver your concerns and walk away

Kevin I don't know why you have got your panties in a knot - I was neither rude nor insulting. I wasn't disrespectful, I was just stating my opinion as to the manner in which her response to my comment was given. With regard to Jacqui's glowing recommendation of the Kargi Museum I was merely presenting the other side of the coin.

I struggle to know what this man should do. Whether we like it or not, some things we find unacceptable as Brits are acceptable in Turkey. We should accept many of them if we decide to spend time in other cultures.
Obviously not always and the treatment of animals is one such area. The guy could have had no idea he was doing anything wrong and the outcry from us foreigners may have come as a complete surprise.
I vowed not to go there because of the donkey situation - but surely he has done the right thing now and chosen to listen to the criticism.
If people damn him for the 'crime' and treat him the same when he puts it right, you may find people may not bother to put things right.
I have no idea who this man is, but give the guy a break for God's sake!
-
We had not been before and the donkey situation was in my mind. We were very kindly invited and taken there by Jim and Helen Fraser. We found the family who run the business very nice people. We had extremely quick service, food was put down about 2 minutes after we arrived. There is no menu, you just get the full breakfast. We had the best service and when a dish was empty, we were asked if we wanted more, we also had bottled water and then glasses of pomegranate juice, the juice was topped up. We started with a frying pan of 4 eggs and then when this was finished we got a frying pan with an omelette. As soon as we finished the table was cleared and tea and coffee served and then a big bowl of fruit. The family gave us oranges and lemons when we left. We had a great experience and we could not fault the restaurant in anyway. Great food, great service, fabulous views.
As I said we neither saw, heard or smelled any donkeys and we did have a walk around the place and up to the rental accommodation which has a pool. We did not go behind the restaurant so cannot comment about that. There was no donkey milk advertised.
I care very much about animals and hope there are no hidden donkeys. All the livestock we did see IMHO were in good condition.
I agree with Scunner, give the guy a break. He and his family have a living to make. He made a mistake, but cannot keep being punished for it.
-
The mistake was made, he put his hands up and said he is restaurant man, not donkey man and was happy for them to be rehomed where we took them in Nif. They really were in a terrible condition.
He vowed he wouldn't have any more and admitted he had no idea how to care for them.
At that point I would have been happy to go back as many times as possible, it really is the best Turkish breakfast around.
When I saw the Land of Lights article about the donkey milk I was shocked and disappointed.
We went to see what was going on.
Once again these poor animals were in cramped conditions with long hooves, poor skin and the babies tethered so they couldn't reach their mothers milk.
I made the decision not to go back and stand by it.
I don't know how many he has now, the relevant people need to go and investigate.
There's a lot of things about the culture here that upset me, Kurban Bayram is one of them. I choose to stay indoors that day.
I know I have no possibility and no right to interfere with or change their culture., but doesn't mean I like it or want to be part of it.
Everyones free of course to go where they like and enjoy what they like, personally it's not for me.
