Squat toilets (aka "holes in the ground"} used to be fairly common in Calis and Fethiye in the 1990s. Hilary would send me ahead to investigate the facilities at any new place before she was willing to venture there. But I hadn't seen any for quite a few years. Until last September. We went to Marmaris and strolled along the coastal trail to Icmeler (to be recommended}. Approaching Icmeler the front is quite impressive with sparkline white hotels lining the bay; quite the upmarket sort of place. So it was something of a surprise that the first pleasant looking, shady, quiet bar we found facing the beach turned out to have squats,
Are there any left in public places in Calis and Fethiye?

;Dmost of the sqauters have been removed from Calis now, :'( ??? :-* :-*

There are squat toilets in all the public lavvies in Fethiye. I've used 'em. No big deal.
Here's a "how to" :-

Don't forget, squatting was invented several millennia before the crapper. ;)

If you go to the public toilets in Fethiye by the taxi rank there are squat and normal toilets there. Also I have seen them in Yaka Park but they do also give you a choice.
-
They used to have them in Dalaman airport, every 2nd cubicle
-
We've got one in our downstairs loo, it's OK for Lee but I trek upstairs. Devlet hospital still has them but does have "proper" loo's as well.
-
I've not used one but they are in many public places, as is the Turkish way. I think they were very clever those days, and hygienic too, no loo roll (to block up narrow waste pipes) but a water spray to wash your 'parts'. Problem for us foreigners is negotiation, if you're a bit arthritic or wearing trousers! :-\
-
Came across them on our first visit many years ago.
If desperate, I may have contemplating it then, but not now for fear of doing myself a serious injury.
I much prefer our home comforts.

People wearing trousers and of any age are quite capable of using them.
-
The public toilets at the Dolmus station iin Fethiye (behind the mosque) are the squat type. But I would recommend taking a gas mask if you are going to use them!
-
That's the downside with them. There's no u-bend, so no water to stop the smell coming up.
-
I used to sell sanitaryware and the squatting pan should be fitted with a UBend.

That may well be Rimms, but many aren't. Or, if they are, it's probably not such a deep one as we're used to in the UK. Not that I've made a study of this particular subject you'll understand. :)
-
Well, I've noted the one-legged recommendation you posted, KKOB, but I think I'll stick to removing trousers and hoping there is a hook to hang them on.
-
I think they should fit handles inside the doors for the aged and the infirm
-
I much prefer the squat toilet when out in public - more hygienic for a start but agree with davybill some sort of hand rails for those that have difficulty maneuvering into and out of the squat position :)
-
I've seen a few that have them but, if the cubicle's too wide they're not a lot of use except to tuck your trousers into for safe keeping. :)
