Hi we usually change money on the main street opposite the meeting point resturant most of the exchange shops are very helpful
-
We always used to use Zumrut, but last time found the Official Change Shop , just a few yards further on, was giving a better rate. Also, ask them is this the best rate, they will usually give you a little bit more.
Tell your parents to always change money in easy denominations i.e. £20, £30,£100, £200 etc., and always after it has been counted out to them, to count it back before they leave the counter and ask for a receipt.
Do this anywhere they change money, even in a Bank.
-
Jacqui I have to disagree with you.
In my experience the Official Change Shop always advertised a lesser rate than Zumrut (albeit 0.01 or 0.02).
And I have never haggled over a rate - what's the point of that.
-
so I could do with some help giving them exact directions
Where are they staying KathB

We had changed money at Zumrut and noted when we walked up that the Change Shop had a better rate on offer. Also, the guy in the shop gives you a card to show next time and he offers to give you a better rate than advertised outside.
I have read on this Forum that he does give regulars and locals a better rate, so on this information, we did not haggle we just asked was this is best rate and he gave us more.
I do not question this, I just take the best rate.
Incidentally, even if you don't change money at the change shop. Take the little booklet on the counter, it's a discount booklet with discounts for local businesses, restaurants etc., for Calis, Oludeniz and Hisaronu.
As we all now know it is illegal to change money anywhere else apart from an Official Change shop and a Bank...I am always very law abiding. ;) ;D
-
By that token KathB's parents will be getting a worse deal than others.
Sedan's yer man :)
-
I used the official change shop last year and the year before - last year he told me I reminded him of someone. Turns that someone was me!
-
Is there such a thing as an Official Change Shop.
(Serious question)
-
Last year after going into a jewelry shop for money, we were actually followed down the street and shouted at by somebody from the change shop saying that what we had done was illegal!
-
For the sake of KathB's parents can someone assure them that if they use Zumrut (or other outlets) they won't be doing anything illegal.
Important I think.
-
Yes H it's the one Jacqui described above. Right hand side walking up from the bridge, just a bit further up from the ATM's.
We've always used them and never had any problems. They always count the money out in front of you
As far as I know it's illegal in Turkey for anyone else to change money.
Or so I've been told anyway ;)
-
I can assure you they will be involved in doing something illegal. Although maybe it's the shop that does the illegal part.
-
You're probably right there Scunner, but not worth the risk really.
-
Hang on a minute - there are loads and loads of places where you can change money in the region.
Are we really saying that it's risky doing it other than at an "Official" Change Shop, whatever that is, or a bank. :(
-
Yes, that is why it has a notice in the Change Shop to tell you it is illegal to change money anywhere other than the Official Change Shops or the Banks.
This is why all the shops that used to (maybe still do) change money, have now taken down the signs from outside their shops, because it is illegal for them to offer to change money. Note no sign outside Zumrut's anymore. Incidentally H, he is Sedat, nice guy, we have bought from him the past, nothing against him at all, but the perhap KathB's elderly parents may not want to break the law?
-
It is illegal H, but you could go on exchanging your money at the jewellers for years and nothing happens, but if they decided to have a crack down for whatever reason someone could be in trouble.
A few years ago one of the other jewellers that we know in Calis changed some money for us and took us right to the back of the shop so we couldn't be seen! Thats when we found out it was illegal, though they obviously think its worth the risk
How the clothes shop man has been getting away with it all these years is beyond me!!
-
Thanks for the clarification people.
I know where I will be changing my £20 the next time I am over.
Sedar here I come.
-
All the jewellers who used to have signs about exchange, no longer have them. We used the official exchange shop this year and found the rate to be very competative. :)

Sedat !!

The change offıces have to pay for lıcences to run theır bsuıness. Would the jewelers lıke ıt ıf the change offıces started sellıng cut prıce jewelry and takıng theır busıness away.
-
True, except the jewellers were changing money for the tourists for years before a change shop even appeared.
-
Gurbuz ( the jeweller we all used to use ) told me that they were all forced to take down their signs after an official complaint by the owner of the new Change Office.
(It is interesting to note that it was very shortly after the arrival of the new change Office that Gurbuz threw the towel in and moved to Brighton.)
IF it is illegal to change money elsewhere, and the Change Office guy knows Sedat is changing money ( and every one does ) I can't imagine he has not reported Sedat. I wonder why no action has been taken.
-
I don't think the taking down of signs was particularly due to a complaint by the Change Office in Calis, as signs have been take down in all resorts, i.e. Hisaronu, Oludeniz, Ovacik etc., Even Colin, the clothes shop (and now Estate Agent) guy took his signs down.
I would think that probably Sedat has been reported, but they would need to catch him in the act now. He does not stand outside the shop and advertise that he changes money. However, Colin does and it makes me wonder just how he gets away with it as he is blatant.
I have read that some places that change money such as a well know bag shop in Oludeniz (which offers a better rate than the Banks and Change Shops )could be money laundering. However, I have no idea if this is true or not.
Incidentally, Gurbuz is Sedat's Uncle.

I always use my Halifax Clarity credit card at the ATM. Perfect exchange rate and no fees, bar a few pence in interest (83p over two weeks last year for around £1000 in withdrawals).
I also don't need to carry £1000 or more in sterling around with me (or stash it in the room/dodgy safe), which would unnerve me.
