Very sad news and very worrying situation that is developing in Turkey.

BBC now saying 20 dead and perhaps 50 injured. The central square in Ankara is closed and the peace march in support of Kurdish people has been cancelled. Turkish Government said to be investigating claim that the marchers' bus was attacked by suicide bomber.
-
Several Turkish media sources now stating 50 dead and 126 injured.
Suicide bomber my arse.
JF

If this was a peace march for the Kurds on the border as it said on Sky News, why would the Kurds plant a bomb? The first suggestion was it was the PPK then I heard it may have been ISIS. Wonder what Reg thinks?
-
I said it on the currency thread weeks ago - violence like this will escalate on the run up to the election date. Only one winner and god knows how many poor folks will suffer as a result.

Number of dead is now up to 40...
It may be coincidence but Facebook has been unavailable in Turkey for the last hour...
-
Twitter the same :(
-
Some horrific photos on Facebook :( :( :(
-
ITV News now saying death toll is 186. I realize that one murder is just as sad as a hundred if you know the person involved but this is now looking like a massive incident.
-
Colwyn - I think you meant 86 did you not.

Sadly SKY NEWS now advising 86 dead and 186 injured...awful to hear!
-
How can people go about filming the injured on their phones - it's disgusting :(

Quite right. My apologies.

Dreadful :( >:( :'(

It's a cultural difference - you find it disgusting, they don't. You only have to watch the news in Turkey to see that what would be unacceptable on the BBC for example, is perfectly fine for broadcast in Turkey. Its the same in many countries, it doesn't make them bad people.
In some respects, they're not that different to any other media observer - they're capturing a moment in time, just with a phone as opposed to a Sony HD news camera.

"....is perfectly fine for broadcast in Turkey."
It may be a culture difference right enough, JohnF.
I was quite shocked by some of the pictures posted on facebook by Turkish people - they were horrific. :(
-
Unfortunatelly it is announced now that 95 people are killed :(
-
With the numbers of injured it is almost certain that the number killed will increase in the coming days.
Simply horrendous :( :( :( :
-
I'm just amazed and disgusted how one human being can do this to another
-
One curious statistic, that I believe relates to both tragedies (Suruç as well), is that there have been no reports of Polis or other security personnel injured. Given that there is always a heavy Polis presence at any demonstration or gathering, it surely must be a large slice of good fortune that allowed these stalwart protectors of the people to emerge unscathed while young men and women, children and the elderly were blown to phucking bits while demonstrating for peace.

CBF logo very fitting :(
-
JohnF is correct, no police nor security staff seem to have been injured or killed. How can this be, given that at any demonstration, they are always there. Not so long since Gezi Park.... Read into that what you will. :(
-
After the blast large crowds gathered and started chanting anti Erdogan and anti AKP slogans, and hey presto
the Polis flooded the area shooting their guns in the air to disperse the crowds. Tonight its water cannon and tea gas
as protests take place across Turkey. Also reports that the true death toll is 128. Awful times. :'( :'(

Many of you will have seen this image yesterday as it was a Reuters agency pic. Some are describing it as iconic, personally I'd call it tragic.

Sadly, Izzettin Çevik a schoolteacher and his daughter Başak Sidar Çevik both died from their injuries. His other daughter Nilgün was also killed and his wife Hatice seriously injured.
Not much more you can say really...

That is dreadful and so sad. We see pictures but do not know who the people are or their story, when we do, it is so upsetting. I am gutted to read this. It is a tragedy. I hope his wife survives, but she has a huge hill to climb to try and re-build her life if she does. Thanks for sharing this J.F. It brings it all home how people have suffered and died.
-
Exactly right Jacqui. Too horrific.
-
A truly horrific video posted on Facebook by a Turkish friend of mine - I could only watch snippets because it's so graphic.
Certainly a huge culture difference JohnF

Witnesses and victims’ families, as well as opposition parties, ascribed direct responsibility to the government for allegedly failing to provide any security measures ahead of the peace rally, saying police officers who arrived at the scene after the bombing fired teargas at grieving families who rushed there to inquire about their loved ones.

An eye witness told the BBC that riot police blocked a nearby road and refused to let ambulances through to help the injured. Inhuman.
-
It's good to see that the pious, sycophantic rag Yeni Şafak (http://www.yenisafak.com/en/news/protesters-gather-at-scene-of-ankara-bombings-2320730) are on the case:
"One of the bombers had been identified as a male aged between 25-30 after analyzing bodies at the scene and taking fingerprints, the Yeni Şafak daily said."
Apparently they're also disclosing who really shot JFK on Wednesday and have an exclusive interview with the Turkish astronaut who walked on the moon before Neil Armstrong on Friday.
W@ankers.

Not just the BBC Kevin, it's been widely reported across certain parts of the Turkish media as well. But of course it was done in the interests of "National Security".

I know I have said it before, but sadly millions of Turks - the pious, the corrupt, the stupid, the violent and the uneducated - will continue to vote for Reg and the rest of the barks in the AKP. And a good number of these barks, and members of the nationalist parties, will wring their hands in public and say how terrible it is, but within their own closed communities they will say that a good job has been done in the bombing.

Looks like the AKP are finally getting the message:
"Yıldız, the former energy minister, acknowledges that educated people did not support the AK Party in the previous election.
“As the education level [of voters] increases, the votes of the AK Party seem to fall. Why? The opening of new universities in every province spells our suicide,” Nokta quoted Yıldız as saying."
