Title: shocked
Post by: cheffy on November 18, 2015, 06:45:24 AM
listening to the chanting during the one minute silence during the Turkey and Greece match left me feeling really dissapointed , I know a bunch of disrespectful football hooligans does not represent a nation  but in the light of the recent past 5 days you would imagine that common decency would prevail,  I hope the football association address this like a ban from next year's contest.
I love Turkey, and had my best holidays here , I've also seen read wonderful stories of kindness on this site, but I cannot help feeling bitter about last night, it's so sad

Me too...... Always defending beautiful Turkey to people that dont understand and they go and do this.  Just dont get it and understand why. Pardon the pun, but if the boot had been on the other foot.

On Twitter Turkish Football.com are saying it's just not in their culture, and they didn't observe the silence after the Ankara bombs either.
Apparently they were shouting 'Martyrs don't die, the nation won't be divided'
A popular slogan chanted in protest at terrorism.

I was surprised to see people tooting and cheering at the funeral procession of the soldier from near Fethiye a few weeks ago.
We're used to a culture of silence in such situations.

I believe it is just different and prefer to think of it in the same way as when they butt in at the bank etc.

I was shocked too, but reading more I understand it a bit better.

I know they're also very hurt about not getting the same air time and social media acknowledgment as Paris when they've had multiple bombings.

I'm sorry but the explanation above is a load of crap.

One minute of silence is very much part of Turkish culture.
During the national anthem people stand still, don't move and don't speak.

The anniversary of Ataturks death is on November 10 th and there is one minute of silence. Yes, you can hear the horns of cars but you won't hear people making any sounds. No booing, no whistling. Just standing still, not moving even their arms.

I've just watched the incident on youtube and it was simply disrespectful. Nothing else.

No matter how much I love this country, I won't find an excuse for the appalling behaviour last night.

I'm with Dutchie on this one.

Disgraceful behaviour which the Pious One has failed to come out and condemn...  but then again, given this government's covert (and at times overt) support of IS it's hardly surprising.  Even if anyone, in an official capacity, does say anything now the damage has been done.

Disappointing and extremely concerning. I cannot see that sort of display doing a great deal to help the tourist industry.

All the football matches I have been to in Turkey where they are commemorating fallen polis or soldiers, including 25 year old Adnan Ergen from Seydikemer, killed earlier this year,The Last Post is played over the stadium tannoy.Everyone stands up to pay their respects. There is no singing and no chanting. When it is finished the National Anthem is then played as is normal before every football game in Turkey.

This incident let Turkey down around the world and could, in the long term affect the Tourist Industry.  People who are nervous about terrorism will, perhaps, think twice about travelling to Turkey if they hear that here was no support for a one minutes silence.

When several Police officers were killed a couple of months ago you couldn't move in Fethiye for all the people and cars driving around half the night beeping their horns. This went on for three nights; some businesses had to close and have Police protection.

When 100 people were killed at the Peace rally you could have heard a pin drop.

The truth is that there is a lot of support for the nationalists and a lot more support than people realise for ISIS, otherwise there wouldn't be so many of them living and roaming free with impunity in Turkey and open borders in the east where they can come and go as they please.
