With a number of people comparing holidaying in Turkey with other European destinations - as alternative choice or for second holiday - I thought I'd put in some costs for Turkey v Portugal. These are based on our June 2016 holiday in Turkey and Sept 2016 in Estoril near Lisbon. Estoril is described "An exclusive resort town long recognized for attracting royalty" (Tripadvisor) so I was expecting some high prices.
Flights from Bristol
Turkey = £811; Portugal = £266.
Accommodation
Turkey {ApartOtel suite} = night £35; fortnight £490.
Portugal {3* Hotel} = night £52; fortnight £732.
TOTAL so far Turkey = £1301 Portugal = £998.

Very interesting Colwyn.

I hope you enjoy Estoril, its an area we've spent a fair bit of time in. More so Cascais than Estoril itself as most of our friends live there, its not quite as expensive as Estoril.
Easy to get to Lisbon, frequent and quick trains straight to Cais de Sodre station cost just over €4 return. Last train back down the line is 1:30 or 2:00am so perfect if you want to head out for a night in the Barrio Alto!

Yes but how much is Efes in Portugal?
-
Thanks John, yes we are looking forward to promenading down to Cascais. I went to a conference in Lisbon and, despite disliking most capital cities, found it a very pleasant place so we intend spending a couple of days there. One day site-seeing - going up by antique tram to the castle and then down again and across the centre to go up by the extraordinary street elevator to the hilltop suburb (the name of which escapes me for the moment). Another day I think Hilary will fill with visits to art galleries. I thought we would bus it up to, and around, Sintra as well on another day. I am surprised no-one is surprised at me visiting a place variously described as "exclusive", "stylish" and "classy". Naturally Hilary will meld in effortlessly; I may need to up my game a notch or two.
P.S. UBT would be clearly out of place in such a classy place. Efes indeed! I shall be drinking tankards of red wine.

[Sorry. Mistake].

When I passed through customs when leaving Portugal they confiscated my fortified wine. I thought, great. I've been deported.

I've just booked a week in Faro, Portugal in March next year. Flights, hotel etc. at very attractive prices.
Nothing will stop me from coming back to Fethiye but the comparative costs are now noticeably different.
Portugal's flight prices, eating out prices, car hire - all the usual stuff; Turkey used to be so much cheaper than the western European holiday spots.
It's no longer that way, despite the favorable exchange rates.
It's Scunner's "damn you Calis" feelings that prevail - I'd miss the place too much not to visit every September........
However, any consideration of buying a second home there is very much on the "back burner".

This is what worries me most about the future of Calis. Those with properties are probably wondering whether to sell up and get out and those thinking of buying are having second thoughts.
The future looks very precarious especially for the those hoping to make a living from the tourist. :( ??? :( :(

Spent a week in Lisbon in September. It was fabulous and so cheap. Had to buy another suitcase to take home all my port lol. It has great winter temperatures too
-
It upsets me too, old chum.
What was once a very realistic, exciting proposition for my retirement has become something of a worrying quandary.
Annual - or even (when I can afford it) twice a year breaks in Fethiye and Calis I would very much like to continue.
Local contacts, friendly welcomes from people I've met and familiar haunts are still very attractive and I would miss them terribly but as to buying a holiday home there - major concerns.
It's all rather upsetting, really.
-
To qualify my posting - it's not solely the financial element that concerned me.
12 months ago I looked at a property in Fethiye that I was sorely tempted to buy. My savings would allow me to buy it outright (with a little bargaining - even so, I would probably have gone for it).
Through CBF I looked at all the postings associated with buying a property there.
Political movement, nationalistic "attitude", - so much has changed in recent times.
CBF offered me so much in the way of informed opinion.
Erdogan's Turkey is not moving in the direction that affords me any encouragement to buy my own home there.
I'll be back in September - for a holiday.
-
I absolutely don't blame you. Very wise caution IMOP. :(
-
I've spoken so long and so loud with friends and relatives about the positive elements that I have enjoyed in Turkey for fifteen years.
The reservations (that's minimizing the attitude) that so many of them had about Turkey I've argued against and put my personal experience and views forward.
I'm struggling now.
Perhaps, in retrospect, I have been part of the "Fethiye bubble".

Prices for beer in a cafe in Cordoba. Draught San Miguel, and served with a smile :)

But where's the F in Efes.?? ???
-
Suppose it depends on where you go, I was in Mallorca last week and the San Miguel was 3 Euro in most places.
-
On the plus side, spending holiday spending in Turkey is now 2% cheaper than it was this morning {£=4.5TL}.

Aye, very true. We go to places where the locals go, hence the competitive pricing. Here's another just to show it wasn't a one off.

I'm sure you are.
In Benidorm it was 2 bottles of Amstel for 3 euros on the main strip with great service and full sea view. As mentioned, in Portugal the pricing was simplified, 1 euro for beer/wine/soft drinks in many places.

How did the hotels compare? We have not found a hotel in Calis to compare with European resorts.. Basic is the norm in Calis.. The breakfasts are also better...

How did the hotels compare?
. This will be only the second time I have holidayed in Portugal. The first isn't a proper comparison with Turkey since we splashed out on a pousada - an historic building converted into an hotel; ours used to be a convent. The pousada was absolutely splendid {in fact we felt we ought to be dressed more smartly to stay there} and the breakfasts were also excellent. But it wasn't in the usual Calis price range!
-
Tough times ahead, but at least (according to the email I received this evening) even in these uncertain political times, Turkey can compete on price

We are on holiday in the North of Tenerife at the moment. The streets are spotless, no rubbish lying anywhere. There are bins for each category of rubbish. The alcohol is all very reasonable priced with lots of choice. Restaurants are lovely and most expensive wine on wine list is 20 Euros. There is not a lot of English spoken. We note absolutely no full English breakfasts or Sunday Roasts. The restaurants all have local food, lovely fresh fish and meat. No waiters sitting down at tables with you or trying to sell you a property The motorists are so polite, they stop for people at crossings and wave people over the roads, they wait patiently for other motorists and we have yet to hear a horn blown. No parking fees anywhere, just lots of free parking. No stray dogs or cats and no barking dogs at night. When you walk in a shop there is a pleasant "Ola" but then you are left to browse no one bothers you, unless you ask for help, no one follows you along.
However, why the hell do I still love Calis and cannot wait to get back ????
-
We were like that in Croatia Jacqui.
No atmosphere and no Turkish charm.
-
I think you would be very dissapointed with Southern Tenerife Jacqui.. It may be cheap but it is definately a pub..English breakfast and and rough sort of place.. The Veronicas is a place to avoid...
-
I know Mercury, that is why we are in the North. Nothing like the South and we are not planning any trips south either.
