Title: First alcoholic drink and what age?
Post by: mercury on December 11, 2015, 18:40:20 PM
We were just discussing if we could remember our first alcoholic drink... Barrie said that when his Mum re. married they had a huge party and he remembers snafflin a bottle of jubilee stout and drinking it under the table when he was 11..
My first memory was going with my Mum to deliver a Christmas card to my Godmother. .. She gave me a tiny drop of sherry in a lovely  little glass and some shelled walnuts.. I must have been about 8... .Barrie also used to go from school at 14 for half a bitter and egg and chips in his local pub..

I was a junior in an Insurance Company along with another girl my age (we are still friends).  We were both 17 years old.
We went out with the boys from the company to watch them play football in the Insurance Leagues. After the match, the boys took us to the pub with them for a drink.  Neither of us had been in a pub before without our parents and we asked the boys to get us a babycham each.  We were terrified in case the owner chucked us out for being under aged.  However, nothing was said.  When I went home, I did not tell my Mum.

I think, sadly, that my first alcoholic drink may have been Warninks Advokaat - most probably because it was the one drink nobody wanted. It was ok actually, and I would have been around 13.

My first drink of the paid for type was Ben Truman at the Dolphin in Leighton Buzzard when I was 16. The Dolphin is now an old people's home but you could taste the hops in Ben Trumans, apparently.

My first was Advokaat and lemonade at about 9/10 years to toast the new year with my parents and then progressed to a small sherry for the same new year toast at around 12/13 old.

Mine was one Christmas when I was about 11. It was ginger wine which I'd never had/seen before. I thought was like cordial and loved the fiery taste, so I kept sneaking another glass while the grown ups were busy. I've never understood till THIS YEAR why I was poorly all night! I bought some last week and see it is 13.5 % !

I'm told that I snaffled a sip of somebody's champagne when I was a bridesmaid at aged 4. For some inexplicable reason, I'd been seated on the top table, rather than with my parents. When the best man asked everyone to toast the bridesmaids, I objected very loudly that I didn't want toast, apart from my poor mother, who was, by now, trying to hide under the table, it pretty much brought the house down  :D

Mine was probably a cider at Christmas aged about 12.
1st paid for was at a local country pub aged 15, we used to sit in the beer garden and send a mate who had a 'bum fluff' beard to the bar.

When we were kids we used to climb over the pub wall into their yard, get a load of empty bottles and take them round the
front to the "outdoor", get the deposits off them and buy pop and crisps. One night in the yard we found a crate of Mackeson
Ale and got stuck in. It was awful, we were heaving, never touched another drop until I was fourteen.
That pub was the centre of the local community and on Sunday mornings they held Whippet racing, there would be dozens
of dogs, three or four Bookies and an old fella with a hand cart selling Winkles & Whelks by the pint or half pint, using glass
tankards. There was all sorts being flogged "cheap" no questions asked. There was a an Indian guy,the first one I ever saw
flogging Lace, Materials and gents Ties out of suitcases. He was your original Delhi Boy.  Happy days.
The pub is now a drive through Maccies and the huge pub gardens that hosted the racing have now grown three blocks of
apartments.       :(

First taste was when I wondered what my father was drinking on a Saturday evening when I was about to go to bed. So he gave me a spoonful of the black stuff. In was Guinness and I thought it tasted worse than medicine. I guess I was seven or eight.

First "proper" drink was when I was probably about fifteen, in a back street pub in the far-from-elegant Weston-Super-Mare. It was a half of rough cider {those not from the West Country may well call it "scrumpy"} and cost 5d - which is about 2p in new-fangled currency.

After smelling my father's beer when I was quite young, I never touched a drink till I was 23. It was a Cinzano and lemonade, and once I got the buzz I liked it, and have spent the last forty years liking all sorts of alcohol especially dry white wine or a nice vodka and tonic!!!

Crikes Badge snap!!  First paid for pint was a Charringtons Light and Bitter... bloody awful.  But that's what men drunk then ... me and my chums was only sweet sixteen, as we sat in the dark corner of the public bar of the Blue Anchor supping the gut rot.  And feeling very pleased with ourselves too!!

Funny to read how many people recall getting drunk, and consequently very sick, on a particular drink and never touching it again!  Mine was cider, when I was about 15. It wasn't my first alcoholic drink but the memory of it lingers to this day. Just the thought of it makes me feel ill even now!   :(

I finished off on my eighteenth birthday with several rum and blacks. Following that I could never go near the stuff; if someone sat on the next table in a pub with a rum I could smell it and had to move away. Then, a couple of years ago, my younger daughter went to Barbados on honeymoon and brought me back a small bottle of Barbadian Four Square rum. Absolutely delicious and nothing like the stuff they sell in UK pubs. I loved it.

One ill fated evening with my mates at a dance I decided to try Barley Wine and drank a lot of them all evening.
I woke up mid morning lying in the snow on a garden wall in a brand new suit absolutely freezing and a hangover
that lasted two days. Deadly potion.

As a student, when I finished my Finals, I thought I would mark the occasion by inventing a drink. It was the 3 Bs - a pint glass with half of Bitter, a bottle of Barley Wine and topped off with some Brandy.I was intending to have one; unfortunately my chums thought it would be a great laugh to buy them for me all night. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh ................

My mum was never a drinker as such, so she didn't go in for fancy drinks. At Christmas she would take a bottle to the co-op off license and buy draft mead from the cask. Horrible sickly sweet stuff, but I still drank it. My Gran also used to make wine. Rhubarb, sloe berry etc....one sip was potent.
