Title: Istanbul Bomb - numerous casualties
Post by: JohnF on January 12, 2016, 09:35:52 AM
Explosion this morning in Sultanahmet Square, at least nine dead and many injured.

Edit: For anyone who knows the area, it was in the middle of the square close to the large obelisk.  Would have been busy with tourists and first reports suggest they are in the majority of casualties.

Hearing reports that a "media ban" has been imposed.  On the basis that every news agency in the world is running the story I really can't see what this will achieve, other than to make life difficult for local media and news agencies.

Has there ever been a terrorist attack anywhere near Calis/Fethiye?

Closest significant incidents in recent years were probably the Kusadsi bus bombing in 2005 and the bombs in Marmaris in 2006.

There were bombs that was planted (and went off) in Fethiye in 1994. Thankfully no fatalities:

Well that should narrow it down to several hundred thousand that they let cross the entire country unchecked.

I couldn't drive 40 minutes to Dalaman Airport without getting pulled in...

Based on the usual misinformation from RTE and his shoebox stuffers, it'll either be :

a) It didn't happen.
or
b) The Kurds did it.

It's reported on Sky that nine of the dead in the blast are German, so that's another sector of tourism that's likely to be hit.

The Turkish PM has named the bomber as a 28 yr old Syrian member of ISIL.!!  Two speed detection rate I think.

Following the assassination of the top Human Rights lawyer Tahir Elci in Diyarbakir last year, all the evidence including CCTV

footage has been "lost".      :( :(

Turns out he was Saudi born and had registered with the authorities about a week ago.  They identified him from a finger (he'd been fingerprinted when registering) that was still intact after the blast.
