Bit like the "what book do you recommend" thread but.....films.
As a non - visitor to the cinema for many years I watch a lot of films on Amazon Prime and dvd.
I reluctantly, on advice from No. 2 son, watched "The Hunger Games" series and surprised myself by thoroughly enjoying them.
Last night I re - watched "The Mouse that Roared", a brilliant Peter Sellers film about a small principality in Europe declaring war on the USA.
On the down side, in order to keep OH happy, I suffered through "The Fault in our Stars". Not exactly a bad film but so, so emotional.
What films, old or new, have you watched that you have enjoyed and would recommend - or not?
-
I enjoyed Alexander Nevsky by Eisenstein; and Man of Marble by Wajda. But I didn't see those down at the local Odeon.
P.S. 1st 1938; 2nd 1974.
-
Nice Colwyn! (Don't know anything about them).
You could also try Al Jolson in "The Jazz Singer" - they can now put sound into movies!
-
(Don't know anything about them).
No point in posting about films that everyone knows! But I'm told some of the early Bond ones were quite good.
-
Fair point.
Coincidentally, bought all the Sean Connery/Bond ones in charity shop recently.
Haven't got around to them yet.
Rereading the Bond books (all 14 of them in a box set) intermingled with travel books and biographies.
Most disappointing film I've seen in comparatively recent times was "Taipan" (also found in charity shop) - a wonderful book by James Clavell and a truly appalling film.
I was advised to watch "Das Boot" and gosh, how I tried. Critical acclaim by the ton but I just couldn't get into it.
Perhaps I had too many interruptions (it happened with "Ghandi" as well) - maybe I should try both again.
I may simply be too shallow for the highbrow stuff!
-
Good film of a book - Apocalypse Now the film of Joseph Conrad's great book Heart of Darkness - though I am not sure the film mentions this.
-
I watched a good copy of the revenant last week, brilliant film and deserving of the awards it's receiving.
Watched Stallones Creed, again a very good film worth watching. I've got copies of Black Mass, Star Wars,
Mad Max, Joy and The Ridiculous 6, a spoof of The Magnificent 7 lined up to watch. Just trying to find time. :)
-
Yet more evidence that I'm a lightweight!
Tried to read Conrad's "Youth" as part of school syllabus.
Crashed and burned.
Surprisingly, I've never watched "Apocalypse Now".
I've never been too keen on war films and have probably missed some good ones.
"Bridge on the River Kwai" was a wonderful exception - all emotions came into play.
Happy to take your advice on "Apocalypse Now" and give it a bash.....
Do "Cabaret" and "South Pacific" count as war films?
Enjoyed them.
Kevin 3 - apart from all the Star Wars (and Mad Max but I didn't like that) I've not seen your choices.
Thank you. I'll give them a bash (already intrigued by "The Ridiculous 6" ;). Sounds like it should be in my "watchable rubbish" collection along with" Bill and Ted" and "Trinity is my Name".
I've only recently read that the Revenant is based on a true story. Sounded a bit gory, like the chap who cut his arm off to escape from a mountain. Not sure if it's my cup of tea.

Titanic
Gladiator
Midnight Express
Once Upon a Time in America
A Fist Full of Dollars and a few others.
:)
-
Billy Elliot for Gary Lewis' performance - magnificent.
-
Stuart
The Star Wars and Mad Max films are new versions that are just being released. ;)
-
Romance An officer and a gentleman i will never tire of the end scene in the factory when Richard Gere goes and sweeps Debra Winger up...
The Martins for comedy with Lee Evans and Kathy Burke and the late Frank Finlay.
Gone Girl for a thriller...
Two old now for any gory horror movies which in my youth i just loved :)
-
Highlander and Karennina - Billy Elliot and an Officer and a Gentleman (tears at both) - I am a sentimental wuss. Billy Elliot especially - didn't expect to like that but ended up watching it again.
Never seen the Martins - thank you. Will give it a bash. Not struck on Lee Evans but Kathy Burke is a joy to watch.
Alexandria - Gladiator - up there with my best ever films - the music (emotional - can feel my heart beating). For A Fistful of Dollars - brilliant. Titanic - hmmm.
Kevin 3 - only watched the originals.
Karennina - yeah. In my youth, Texas Chain Saw Massacre et al. No longer need or want that. Never heard of "Gone Girl". Worth a watch?
-
Im not that struck on Lee Evans but he plays a good part as the dad in a dysfuctuinal family, i love it but i do have a weird sense of humor, Kathy Burke plays a blinder as the downtrodden wife...
Gone Girl in my opinion is brilliant and Ben Affleck is rather easy on the eye...i had read the book so kind of knew what to expect, its a bit of a confusing storyline first of all and I just loved 'Amazing Amy",
Friday the 13ths and Haloween were my fav gories in my youth now I just cant stomach the gore!
-
Me too, Karennina.
Same films when younger.
Poltergeist did more than The Exorcist to cause me disturbed nights. "They're ba -ack" (in sing song voice)....and the toothy chap in the hat who called at the front door? Whoo....
......not nice.
I don't know "Gone Girl" or "Amazing Amy". They sound a bit adult(y). Sort of "Debbie does the Dishes" or whatever.
-
My Brit films would be...
The Wicker Man (the ending still manages to shock)
Sexy Beast (one of Ray Winstons best)
The Family Way (great 60's Kitchen sink drama/comedy with John Mills and daughter Hayley)
-
What version of The Wicker Man did you watch philrose as there are two.
-
It certainly was'nt the God awful Nicolas Cage remake.... ;)
The 1973 version with Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee...
-
Ha Stuart sorry for confusfion Amazing Amy is the girl in Gone Girl played by Roseanne or Roxanne someone and what a great part she plays too...sometimes iv been told im too nice for my own good in life so when im trying to be a wee bit tuffer i put my Amazing Amy head on and think like she does!
U would need to read the book or watch the film to know what i mean...
Im enjoying this thread as we love our movies in this house, i think we have roughly about 400 or 500 films to plough through mostly purchased in Turkey....
I loved Poltergeist too and also Midnight Express ( for those members who dont know it was not filmed in Turkey most of it was filmed in Malta...
Also up there with the best for me is Top Gun i read last week there is going to be a sequel to it...
Also Skyfall and the Taken movies love those too :)
-
Kevin3 - streamed the Revenant last week after all the hype, but whilst some of the effects are good it just went on and on for 2 hours 20 mins, I would recommend watching in 20 mins using fast forward!
