Title: Offshore scandal
Post by: kevin3 on April 03, 2016, 20:44:57 PM

Sky News are reporting the biggest financial information leak in history, coming from a large offshore Bank.

The "Panama Papers" contain 11 million files and name 12 World Leaders, former UK MPs and British Peers.

They are being scrutinised by more than 70 Journalists around the world and it looks as though the next

few months could be interesting for some and embarrassing for others. No mention of shoe boxes yet.

So, world leaders and the ultra-rich are channelling huge amounts of dodgy money through offshore accounts. Who'd have thought it ?

In the past it was just talk. Tonight a Mr Putin has been linked to $ 2 billion dollars in just one bank.

A Mr Blair has been mentioned, possibly the same Mr Blair that promised politics "whiter than white".

Fifa officials have received a mention, and the cloak of secrecy is being lifted. An awful lot of people

have now got to explain how they amassed their fortunes and where the money came from.

Do you honestly believe that's going to happen ?

In a lot of cases yes.  A lot of people have shareholders and voters to answer to. There will also be Income Tax officials

around the globe anxious to earn their stripes and perhaps settle old scores. One thing is for sure, it's squeaky bum time

for many. The files are very detailed and track the movements of all sums.

Sadly Kevin I rather suspect that might apply in many other countries, but based on their record to date it will not apply to the UK and our valiant team of tax collectors at HMRC.  The interesting one to watch, from a UK perspective will be Lord Ashcroft, a master of tax dodging who has bankrolled the Tories election campaign in all the key marginals for the last three General Elections.

Did you forget to mention a Mr Blair.?  Apparently his complex web of fiscal dealings has emerged, Lionel Messi's dealings are exposed,

the Icelandic Prime Minister Mr Gunnlaugson may be kicked out of office for concealing his wealth, Libya's Gaddafi and Syria's Assad

have had their dealings exposed. The other side of these files is that bribes and favors paid to others could now become traceable.

Dave Cameron has vowed to crack down on these disgraceful tax cheats. Ironic then that the late Cameron Snr. was one of them.

I have fallen into that trap......

....however, hundreds of the Saudis (all branches of the same royal family, it seems) all look remarkably similar through my infidel eyes.

Can they really believe that a beard and moustache suits every one of them? If that's a religious thing, my apologies for my ignorance and any insensitivity.

Many didn't look like that when their photo's were taken at Oxford or Cambridge universities. H

The first world leader to be toppled over the Panama papers?

The Icelandic Prime Minister, Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson*, named as one of the 12 world leaders in the leaked Panama papers, has lost the support of his own party and threatened to call a snap General Election. The Icelandic President has refused this and is consulting  with other parliamentary parties. “After what happened to this country in 2008 we needed honesty, transparency and integrity from our leaders,” said Bigitta Jonsdottir of the interestingly named Pirate Party. Quite so.

[* Those you you who followed the excellent recent "Trapped" TV series will be familiar with struggling with these Icelandic personal names.]

I can honestly state that my intense hatred for the House of Saud, their kingdom and their hypocritical and duplicitous approach to international relations is not rooted in any form of stereotyping.

If it is, it's probably been supplied by BAE, Raytheon, GE et al in return for a fistful of tainted dollars.

The latest person to face problems via the panama papers is the new FIFA President, Mr Infantino. The list grows.

You are rather good at predicting the next green bottle to fall off the wall Kevin. Do you have an inside line on this? Last year UEFA assured the investigating authorities that UEFA collectively, and Infantino personally, had no connection with a Mr Jinkis indicted on charges of $100million fraud. The Panama papers showed Mr Infantino was a co-signatory of UEFA-Jinkis contracts. Mr Infantino would like you to know that he has done nothing wrong: he simply has a poor memory.

This afternoon police raided the Swiss HQ of UEFA and collected lots of data. I think Mr Infantino's statement today that he

is "dismayed " speaks volumes. If I was in his position and innocent I would be bleedin' outraged. But I think the whole sport's

investigation has got a long way to run. The US missed out on some big events due to corruption, they have got the evidence

and they are going after the big guys. There is more than one way to skin a Putin. The Russians said they had destroyed all

their computers used in their "winning " World Cup bid. I think the US will prove that destruction irrelevant. I think the same

investigators will cause some big problems to the Zarrab / Iran / Turkey triangle.        Mystic Kev.

The Fifa thing is a bit of a nothing really. The guy was one of two people that signed a contract (which is normal practice) that has since been sold on twice. He is two removed from the contract where it is now, in the spotlight and it is unlikely to affect him, although not a good start to his new Presidency apparently.

I have found once again France 24 offering superior coverage to the other media channels.

Yes it may be normal practice Nichola but Jinkis immediately sold on one of the contracted rights for three times the purchase price. Nice little deal that one. How did he get it? Well Jinkis is facing a US court with multiple allegations of bribery so some speculation is unsurprising. Now I don't want to become a bitter old cynic and suggest that all top "entrepreneurs" are basically dishonest but ... it does cross my mind sometimes. Somehow "forgetting" that these contract were signed smells really bad.
