Title: Street Traders
Post by: Clioman2 on June 11, 2016, 16:23:46 PM
There seems to be a dearth of these this year, I assume that the local council has come down on them. Anyone know for sure please?

There are two guys in light blue waistcoats going up and down the prom chasing all the traders away. The other night we had just bought some keyrings from a deaf and dumb boy when they saw him and took him away. The guy who used to dress as a clown and sell kids lighting up toys has to hide from them, the shoe shine guy hides in hotels when he sees them. They stop restaurants encroaching onto the prom even just a little bit. They are making places with music on turn it right down. For goodness sake it is a holiday resort.

Even the flower man had his basket confiscated.
At the auction on week one they were making phonecalls and looked ready to stop us and then quite disappointed when they found we had permission.
The street sellers and local traders help give this place atmosphere and make people want to come back.
Another nail in the coffin.

Funny, we too noticed Adem without his kit a number of times during our visit and the flower seller had his full basket confiscated one night we were on the main street but I am sure it was the Jandarma.
It's going to be difficult enough this year for everyone without this happening

Awful for this to be happening now,  didn't notice any of this when we were out beginning of May. For goodness sake these people are part of Calis, we always look out for Adem particularly for him to clean OH's shoes. It's going to be a very difficult season for everyone,  just hope everyone manages to get through it!  We want to go back   :(

We saw Adem this evening at George's and he took away Phil's shoes to clean.  I was lookng for the flower guy tonight but did not see him..
I do know the Flower Guy is parked need the market on Sunday's and sells his flower from the boot of his car.
It is disappointing that all the street traders are being driven away.  However, the gypsy woman with the roses has not been sent away we see her every night we are down in the Main Street or the Prom.  Saw her again this evening.

It's funny how folks used to complain when the zabita didn't do their jobs...

Sometimes it's a case of be careful what you wish for.  I've seen areas of Istanbul "sanitised"  by over zealous enforcement by the belediye, and believe me,  the "atmosphere" doesn't come back overnight.

Oh really??
When was the last time I heard someone say 'I must go back to Calis there is a guy who cleans shoes' or 'I really must return to Calus there is this lovely woman who comes round at least three times a night and shoves roses in my face when I am eating or in conversation.  I never buy them if course but the joy that she keeps coming back night after night and doing the same ... A holiday must for me!'

Willy Thorn, we call the flower man, was selling his flowers at the restuarants last night, and the man who sells
the kiddies flashing toys had them on a little barrow parked outside the Nil bar, selling wind up toy cats.

;D  Willy Thorn!  Great name. Never thought about it before but I can see why now!

You should meet his cousin Willy Ecerslite.  Lovely bloke but he does not sell flowers, sell you glow in the dark toys, clean your shoes or indeed he will not guess your weight or weigh you on his scales.

We didn't see the boys with the scales at all during our recent stay.
Has anyone else seen them?

We remarked on that too Anne, didn't see them at all but thought it was maybe down to it being early in the season (first two weeks in May).

noticed today at sunday market that all the traders normally on the street selling water melons etc. have actually been moved into the market itself and off the main road. imo not before time. sunday market road is absolutely chaos with dolmuses and cars.

Kayakebab certainly didnt say that about Jacqui.
Kayakebab doesnt go on forums just to be rude and obnoxious.

I do stand by what I said about atmosphere though.
Last year we went to Croatia and its every but as stunning as Fethiye but is dull and sterile.
No atmosphere what so ever.
I love the characters around here and my family love it too.
My little nephew has mastered 'Do you want the flowers. 10 lira today 20 lira tomorrow' with a perfect accent!

Sorry, last post deleted. It quoted Kayakebab's post but was responding to Jacqui Harvey - who's post it wasn't.

We love good honest debate at CBF but if people are only coming here to stalk and bait specific members, it is not in the spirit of this great community. I will delete these non-positive posts a maximum of twice, then I will delete the stalking member for ever.

Pathetic people, go away.

Apologies Kayakebab - I deleted the post you refer to. I am weary of this person coming here to pick on people and make nasty, personal comments. It will not be allowed to continue.

If you have a problem with a member don't stalk their every post - PM the member. Stalkers and bullies have no place on the mighty CBF.

Back to running a forum to help each other.

Agreed, it isn't like they also contribute recommendations, advice, tips etc - they just come to be nasty to people. Not on my watch  :)

Are you not being a little bit of a grouch U.B.T? Some of these people will not have a chance of a full time year long job. I'm sure they dont really want to  do what they are doing. I normally find a smile and a no thank you does the job.

I quite like it, the sunglasses sellers are good fun and the rest take a firm no without incident. Still not sure those deaf ones are deaf though.  ;)

Agreed AllyB, that's the way we think. Though if you've  never had your shoes cleaned by Adem you should certainly give him a try, he does an excellent job,   ;)
