What is it like in Calis for August? I know a lot of other areas are much quieter since the atrocities in Europe and the attempted coup but curious as to how much it is affecting Calis, due soon and wondered? I usually rent a car and travel a lot through Turkey but probably wont do that this time. Probably stick to Coastal area travel.

considering the current situation find that calis is not as bad as was expected but not as good as past years. quite a few tourists about and a considerable turkish tourist presence. bars and eating establishments just getting on with the situation.
-
It was encouraging to see on Sunday night that most bar/restuarants from the Varil to the Sunset Deck were full.
-
Glad to hear all seems fairly normal!
-
calis very busy tonight. lots of tourists about. really nice to see. long may it continue. heard tonight that adam our shoe shine man has moved to fethiye because of the clampdown on street vendors. so sad. adam was a part of calis for many years.
-
I didn't know there had been a clampdown Jack - sad to see Adem having to move elsewhere and disappointing in general. The rose sellers, sunglasses guys etc are all part of the Calis scene :)
Are they all gone?
-
Apparently so - how sad is that.
People like Adem doing their best for their families and harming no-one.
Very depressing. :( :( :(

I remember a couple of month ago when we were in Calis, it was in the news that the place was being cleared of all the street sellers by the Authorities and the flower man, had his flowers taken off him. The deaf and dumb guy had is keyrings taken from him. We were worried that Adem would have his shoe cleaning things taken. Apparently he was present one night when other street sellers were cleared but he hid and they missed him.
I am really sorry to hear this news. Phil always took a pair of shoes over especially for Adem to clean and I always bought flowers from the flower man. He always used to kiss my hand, when we met him. Such a shame. I think the street sellers are part of the holiday when we are in Calis
Can anyone say why Fethiye would be any different for street sellers, are they allow there, but not in Calis?
-
Flower man & rose sellers been there all this week.

Sad to hear the removal of street sellers as they never Harrassed anyone just part of the holiday, We saw a weigh you boy being escorted off by I assume police of some sort in july when we were there & spoke to adem the day before the failed coup he mentioned going to instunbul to see family, he always said hello & made a point to shake my hand even though he has never cleaned shoes for me.
-
We saw the weigh-you boy "collared" in June too - seems it didn't put him off!! ;D
-
We saw the tourist police out and about a fair bit in may, restaurant and bar staff were not crossing the red brick line on the prom to approach customers either. We will miss seeing adam we would speak to him nearly every night.
-
Us too MarKar. Adem is such a lovely man. OH always makes a point of taking a couple of pairs of shoes for him to clean, he does such a good job of it. Such a shame :(
-
Shoe shine bloke was in Fethiye covered market last week.
Old flower selling woman was in Calis last night.
Didn't see the lads wandering around with scales but never understood that one anyway :)
The older man from the front of house of Mangals is now front of house at a restaurant up the road, opposite the taxi rank.
The kebab chef from Mangals and one of the waiters are now at a large kebab place over the road from the taxi rank.
Best chips in Calis are now officially at Frank Cannons.
It doesn't seem too quiet at all most of the time. Supposedly it has picked up during August.
Flying home tomorrow, it's been a great holiday.
Ps you can still buy flying colourful tat on the prom
-
front really busy tonight. big zabita presence on the strip. oceana. josephs. dawn beach and alis.
-
Perhaps we should start a petition,we want Adem back and present it to the council. This forum has done a lot to support him in the past.
-
I remember the police removing a flower seller and taking his basket off him,[not Willy Thorn] we asked the waiter what
the problem was. he said no licence so they don't pay Taxes. I Dont know weather that's the same with Adem.
-
We have seen the Flower Seller "Willie Thorne" Selling flowers from the back of his car on the road outside the Sunday Market. So, possibly he does not have a licence to sell flowers.
I often wonder where he gets the flowers from, is he a flower grower?, or does he get them from a wholesaler somewhere?
One of the things I miss when in Turkey is buying flowers in the supermarkets, they just don't sell them. Perhaps Turkish people are not keen to have flowers in their houses?
-
You will almost always find the flower man [ willie thorn ] lookalike in the bookies just up from the taxi rank towards the oykun hotel his car parks up along there with his flowers in the back , he was in there in june / july prior to his walkabout with his basket
-
Turkish people like and dislike flowers Jacqui as much as we do. But you're right they don't generally sell them in supermarkets, only florists.

Just back from Calis. All the restaurants we went in gave a warm welcome and just had one below par meal.
Nowhere near as busy as last year. For example you did not need to book a table for Bella Mamas. Was in the Manchero and a waiter said they were 10-15% down which he was ok with as other restaurants around 40% in some cases. The Manchero was full the night we were there. I also heard one of the Serkul restaurants had laid off staff and and even the Oykun was only 2/3 full at a guess.
On a positive note we had a fab time . Same levels of service and quality and people very friendly . Apparently Sept is going to be a busier month which should help business.
Fingers crossed that the next 12 months are calm and new people not just regulars start visiting at Calis again .

heard tonight that adam our shoe shine man has moved to fethiye because of the clampdown on street vendors. so sad. adam was a part of calis for many years.
Had my shoes cleaned by Adem tonight on the main drag in Calis. He said he had been in Istanbul painting, as he was not making enough money cleaning shoes due to the decline in tourist numbers this summer.
-
Hope to see him when we are next over.
-
I can second what yabanci has said, we have been chatting to Adem to night and he said he has been and will be working again in Istanbul building?painting with a friend, he didn't know anything about being moved to work in fethiye, He was very touched when I mentioned everyone on here were concerned about his business.
-
Thanks for letting him know that
-
always love to see adem, love chatting about his family and hearing how they are all doing. such a gentle soul
-
He's such a nice guy and never pushes you for business. I always make sure I have my shoes on at least one night ;)
