Always take minimum with you and change over there. You will get a much better rate. We use our Nationwide card to take out Sterling at no cost and then change it at the change office. If you ask the one in Calis for his best rate he will always up it a little and give you a discount card for future exchanges.

Hi Stoop. Which nationwide account are you talking about? They seem to do quite a lot of card accounts.

We do the same as stoop, it's the Nationwide Flexaccount we use.

As a point of comparison, a fee-free Visa card would have got a rate of 3.855 for a transaction on same day on the same day. Or rather, since cards are settled next working day, it would have been 3.864.

Sigh, kicking myself for only changing £700 in Uk when I got close to 4! But 3.8 is a lot better than here so will take sterling, thanks all!

May be almost our laast trip to Turkey, seeing it slide closer and closer to a more "Middle Eastern" position is disturbing,
have to see how it develops.

Never had a problem with Hbc. but I always go to the bank one in Fethiye, as you can get your card back.
a friend lost their card in the one in Calis, and had to get a new one from UK.

There is also the HSBC cash machine at the Otogar roundabout, by the Shell garage, that also dispenses Sterling.

Will the partial recovery of the £ get it back up to 4TL tomorrow and make calculations so much easier. Your bets please, ladies and gentlemen.

I think the Nationwide changed the terms of their Flex account a few years ago. If you have the old account you can still withdraw sterling abroad without charge. If you were to open a flex account now, I think you get charged for withdrawing sterling abroad.

I'm afraid not. I have an "old" Nationwide Flex Account and all that went years ago. ATM withdrawals are now £1 fee plus 2% transaction cost. So withdrawing 400TL costs you £3 on a Flex card. I am looking at moving to FlexPlus but I am already getting fee-free, transaction-free foreign cash using Norwich & Peterborough.,

£3 plus the 400TL, of course.

Yes, sorry. I missed out the "sterling" bit as it is withdrawing sterling abroad is something I never do. With the old Nationwide debit card foreign currency used to be fee-free. The good thing for me with a pre-2011 account is that spending on credit card (shops, restaurants, etc) is still fee-free in Europe and Turkey.
