Title: Suggestions for few days away
Post by: sunlover on October 19, 2016, 06:14:23 AM
We have booked our flights for next years holiday to Calis, we have 24 days here, and have been staying in Calis for 11 years now, we quite like the idea of seeing a bit more of Turkey now, so far we have booked first 3 days in Calis, and Last 10 days in Calis, with 2 days at Kayakouy just before last 10 days, this leaves us with 10 nights to go other places in between, firstly we will be doung this all by local buses/coaches, we have stayed in Dalyan so not looking at going there, we have had suggested, Olympus, Kekova, Kalkan.

We are now open to any suggestions of places that we could reach for a couple of nights in each, any any accomodation that people recommend would be great, then we can plan our trip.

I look forward to hearing your replies. Carole/ Dave

Morning Sunlover, I highly recommend Cappadocia and it's main town Göreme if you don't mind the travelling. You would certainly need an overnight stay. Amazing place with breathtaking views.  Antalya old town very nice only few hours by bus.

Akyaka beach is a lovely little area near Gokova.. You can visit Sarigerme and Koyeciz from there and eat in a treetop  at Akkaya gardens on the way back. There is a good cheap all inc. at Sarigerme as well..

Okaliptus can be found here: http://www.tomsanokaliptus.com/en/ (http://www.tomsanokaliptus.com/en/). It sits under the mountain (Sakar Tepe) overlooking the conservation plain (Akyaka is environmentally-conscious) and ten minutes walk from the beach. Akyaka is also Turkey's second cittaslow (towns valuing a slow way of life) so prepare to change down a couple of gears. You'll find prices for food and drink are aimed at at Turkish tourists (90%+ of visitors are Turkish) so compared with Calis I think Efes is dear and meals are cheap. You don't say when you are going but I looked up June prices and found that the prices for us haven't gone up but there is a small rise shown on the website. If you are interested I can PM you with more info ("things to do"} nearer your visit - just remind me sometime next year.

Can recommend Akyaka. Had some great meals along the river watching the otters playing in the evenings. Very Turkish, A few English expats and a very easy place to lose track of time.

Very lucky. I've never seen them. Eels and terrapins yes; but not otters.

Another vote for Akyaja here.

You may want to take a look at this post I made a while back...

Whilst we did this by car,it mentions Akyaka and Ephesus which you can use other transport for.

Datca, day trip to Symi (Greece). Stay in Palamutbuku, very relaxed Turkish resort. Stunning drive there from Datca (also dolmus from Datca), explore ruins of Knidos.

Not sure it was down to luck Colwyn, the guys in the Orfez restaurant would lure them out with fish   8).
Also heard a wild boar a couple of time but never saw them. Me and the Mrs spent 4 years there, but the kids outgrew it so we had a change to Calis. The rest is history.

Don't think the bus will take you right into Akyaka, you have to either get off at the junction and walk down into town, or get off before near the traffic lights and take a taxi into town. Buses run regularly to Mugla from Akyaka in May but think only start to run to Marmaris in June from Akyaka. The beach in Akyaka tends to be a lot busier at weekends. Worth going into Mugla, I think market day is Thursday if you want to combine a market visit with a trip to see the architecture in Mugla and visit the museum there.

Two alternatives to those lissa suggests to getting down the hill into Akyaka. See if Kamil Koc or Pamukale will provide a shuttle bus from the main road to Akyaka - they used to do this. Otherwise, if you are going by intercity bus they will probably drop you opposite Akyaka "uç yol" (literally three road, meaning junction with side road, pronounced ooch yoll). You can cross the road and wait at the top of the hill for a Mugla-Akyaka dolmus - they are quite frequent. Take in the view of the gulf = Gökova Korfezi (Gökova = heaven's plain). If you take a taxi you could also ask it to stop at the top of the side road so you can see the view.

If going to Muğla for the great market there and like a Turkish bath the there is an historic hamam built in 1344 just 100 metres from the market midpoint.

How long is the crossing from Datca to Symi and how often does it go?  Would love to go over there for a day.

Not sure it does go now from Datca to Symi. Think it stopped a few years ago. Reason given at the time was that it was not used enough.

Thanks for all the suggestions and information so far,i think Akyaka is definately on the cards now but for September next year, as we have decided that probably ss we are staying first few days in Calis would be silly to head straight back to airport area again, so May trip looks like a few days Calis, then heading to Kas, over to Meis for couple of nights, then to Kalkan, then undecided for couple of nights, then off to Kaya, and back to Calis.

SEptember we will plan to go straight to Akyaka after landing for few days then head maybe somewhere else that region.

There are daily trips to Symi from datca which are run by small Gulet type tripped boats. Whilst in symi this year I saw about 2 or 3 a day coming in. The crossing is about 12 nautical miles, not far, estimate 45 minutes. You would just have to turn up to the quay at Datca and take pot luck, summer months more probable. Datca interesting Turkish town to explore, great street market on a Saturday. Frequent dolmus from Marmaris.

Pamukkale is well worth a visit. We drove and stopped off at the great ruins at Aphrodisia for the afternoon, then on to Pamukkale and a hotel looking straight up at everything: very photogenic. You'd need to stay 2 nights.  It will be busy at peak times, but the beauty of staying is that you can be there out of bus trip hours! We visited on our second day via the adjoining archaeological ruins and stayed until the sun went down, no-one around and glorious as the sun set on the rock formations. The following day we meandered back to Calis via onyx factories and villages. A lovely break. We went in October but I believe it's very crowded in summer. Only thing I would say was we didn't find good food for the evenings. As most people are day trippers seems they are less geared up for the food side.

Priene is also worth stopping at if you're going to Pamukklae.

Try the Melrose House hotel if you go to Pamukkale it's small and friendly  with a pool and greet food. Reasonable price s and lovely family owners make you very welcome.

We often go to Antalya for a few days. Only 4 hours by coach from Fethiye Otogar and something for all tastes. Bustling city, beautiful peaceful and almost pedestrianised old walled town, harbour or beach. Love staying in the old town there. Would recommend it. The coach trip through the mountains with a stop off halfway is also worth doing in itself.
