Title: Two Day Shopping Spree!
Post by: HappyMonday on August 20, 2005, 19:12:54 PM
Hi all

I introduced my family and self back in July.  In mid-October we arrive in Turkey and want to go through the process of furnishing our three bed apartment in Tasyaka.

The plan is to buy everything in just a couple of days.  Can anyone suggest the best shops to go to in order to do this?  I have visited a few in the past and was told by my agent:
- Erin spot might be cheap but not the best place to buy
- Watch out for price lists - they go up when Brits arrive in shops!

Suggestions?

Doug

Yep,I back this up, never had a problem with Bekir at Eren Spot. Bought all of our electrical items from there

Milliyon (is that how you spell it) is also good for general crockery/glasses etc

Perhaps your agent plans to take you to where he will get some commision, we have known Bekir (erin spot) for years and furnished quite a few properties with him and can assure you all get the same deal, he works on very low profit margins so everyone goes to him for a good deal even the Turks (who pay the same as us Brits). He is one of the few Turkish Businessmen that have figured out that stack'em high, sell'em cheap really does work. We have crossed the road to find the same goods at more than twice the price and no deals, but that shop pays good commision to agents, also always empty.
And do watch out for price lists, in some shops there will be Mrrp for Brits who are all well known as being extremly rich and the normal price list for locals.

Thanks Smudge - really good advice here.  Any other key shops to visit?  I have heard it is also worthwhile buying a safe and hotel type keycard system for airconditioning (we will be renting out partially during the year). Any suggestions?

The two big supermarkets, Migros and Gimma are worth a look. Migros often has 'specials' on even 'two for one' aircon units at times. We got our's there and they are great little units.

Also bought a nice stand fan from there last month and it was only about £12.00. Electicals can be good buys but watch out for the cheap 'shove' make as it does not have a good reputation. We've had two dvd players of that make and both have packed in after a short while. The second is still getting 'repaired'.

We didn't use erin spot but it does come very well reccomended.

Have a great shopping expedition! I'm sure you will get most things bought and delivered inside your time frame.

Thanks Doll and Stoop (hope nothing too Freudian in names chosen!) this is great advice for us.  By the way - is there one Erin Spot shop or several?  I'm sure I visited one near the harbour but someone else on the Forum mentioned that there was another one at the Market.  Which is the best to visit?

Pompeyboy, I found it by chance myself, & only know that it is not too far from Migros, but you will not find anyone who delivers faster, I knew of their reputation for speedy delivery, so asked them to hold back a bit, as I wanted to go into Fethiye first, & the missus did not know that I had ordered anything. Needless to say, on my return, one & a half hours later, the washing machine, cd radio, clothes airer & patio furniture were in place & they were just leaving.

Erin Spot is across the road from the Tuesday market just a little before the mosque and the turning for the dolmus station.
You can't miss it - everything is piled high and out into the street.

We bought a washing machine,a fridge freezer and a television from Erin Spot. Delivery was instant (with us included in the truck and a stop off in Gunlukbasi to pick up the plumber to fit the washing machine) The driver carried the washing machine and his mate carried the fridge freezer on their backs up 3 flights to our apartment- we were amazed! We had a bit of a problem with the TV which packed up after a week - Bekir said that in Turkey you are only entitled to have it repaired but as the repair was going to take some time(?)(no good when you are only there for 3 weeks) we persuaded him to give us our money back. We then went to Migros and bought another TV.

Hi Mary Anne

We have moved to one of the apartments at Forest Hill Houses fairly high up on hill at Tasyaka.  Dirt road a bit iffy but told road and Dolmus route (another route though hills to Olu deniz) to be provided shortly.

Thanks to everyone for your kind and VERY helpful responses!

Regards

Doug

we have just returned from turkey and furnished our three bedded apartment from Bekir at Erin Spot.  Everything perfect except we had two tv's and both broke down after a few days.  They were turkish make.  Bekir offered our money back but we said no we would buy british named tv when we return in october.  He was very helpful and could not do enough for us.  Both Bekir and his wife are very very nice trustworthy people.

I can't remember what make it was but it was definately turkish. When we picked it at Erin Spot it was on the shelf and unlike the washing machine & fridge freezer (which we pointed to in the shop but then went to a warehouse to collect)the TV was lifted (dust & all) off the shelf and put in the wagon with no box and the remote and instructions taped to the back. I must admit we were a bit dubious and when it packed up we were less than happy! Bekir then came and took it away to be repaired (saying that in Turkey we were not entitled to a replacement or our money back)(is that right???) and when it hadn't been returned after a week and we were then told it could take up to 6 weeks to repair, we then insisted that we wanted our money back. Give him his due - he gave it to us and we went and bought a brand new one in a box from Migros.

We bought our electrical goods from OCZAN electricals on the top road in Fetiyhe ( get off dolmus from OLU, walk up hill turn right, after 100m on your left. Small shop, very good service, all fitted and delivered in English time. free kettle as a present. He showed us his invoice book showing that a number of Fetiyhe shoppers used teh same place and we got teh same prices as they did. Curtains from Hasan Baydar in the fish market, electrical goods from Star Electric, Sofa and chair from Puffy (more or less opposite eren spot) All mattresses from eren spot along with patio furniture. Eren Spot is good but has limited choice (in my opinion) Its worth a look around, especially on the road that goes out to the Antalya /Dalaman road (the street of a thousand carpenters) for beds and wardrobes. Didn't rate the million shop one bit, brought all that stuff out from IKEA /Tescos. Got most of the above addresses from this site - ta very much, saved us having the shoppers.
