Title: Passports
Post by: charlste on May 08, 2019, 17:10:14 PM
It seems the police are doing spot checks and checking passports on buses and in bars etc.
Before anybody says its the law to carry your passport with you,i know that.
Its a worry that if you loose your passport or have your bag stolen which my wife as it makes you think "do i carry it or not".
Somebody mentioned that you can have your passport notorised in fethiye and then laminated and made smaller.
Does anybody have any info on this.

I can't see that that's going to be of any advantage. The law clearly says that you need to carry your passport, not a photocopy. You're better off spending your money on a money belt or shoulder holster for your passport(s).

I carry ours around in a small shoulder bag which I wear cross body. They are in an inside zip pocket and I always have zip top bags. We've never been asked for them yet but there's always a first time!

I was once given advice by a travel agent that a colour photocopy (preferably laminated) of the personal page of your passport would meet the requirements of the police if you were asked for evidence of identity.  I have followed this advice for around ten years when travelling in Europe, but I have never been asked to identify myself.  I once had my wallet pickpocketed in Fuengirola bus terminus but my passport was safely stored back at the hotel.  Several months later the Spanish police contacted me to say that the wallet had been found and whilst the money had gone, the passport photo was still intact.............it probably frightened the thieves off!  Happy travels.  :)

Interesting note on the foreign office web pages....

Passports have been stolen from rented villas, even when they have been kept in the villa safe. This is a particular problem in Didim, Kas, Kalkan and the Fethiye/Hisaronu/Ovacik areas.

And from the same place, here's something I didnt know.....

If you drive in Turkey, you must have either an International Driving Permit or a notarised copy (in Turkish) of your UK driving licence.

Ive rented cars many times and this has never been mentioned!

I've been stopped many times by the Jandarma and Polis and they've always accepted an EU driving licence and passport and have never asked for an IDP.

But if you've lived there 6 months you should get a Turkish Driving Licence.

It is the law to carry your passport with you at all times when a visitor to Turkey.

There are permanent Jandarma check points in the area, notably one at the top of the hill as you come into Ovacik.

I live in Ovacik and pass this point twice a day just about every day of the week. It is rare to see it empty of stopped vehicles and of course I am stopped frequently.

I have seen many tourists being taken into the station house there, one can only presume because they do not meet criteria in some way.

Polis also have frequent road checks of ALL vehicles and would want to see your passport too.

I've lived here over 5 years, carry mine and my husband's passports and ikamets (residency cards) with me EVERYWHERE. Sometimes the Jandarma/Polis want to see our ikamets, sometimes our passports. If we didn't have ikamets, it is certain that they would insist on seeing our passports.

I had my passport copied and laminated in a small size in Fethiye a few years ago. I always carried that with me. Showed that when dolmus stopped by Jandarma. Perhaps that wouldn't be acceptable now.
