Title: Banking
Post by: Plug on September 18, 2005, 20:29:20 PM
Hi all
Do all banks in Turkey charge you for having a bank account with them? I thought banks paid you for the pleasure of lending your money to other people, like they do in England. Or is it just me. Sorry if this has been asked before.
thanks

Thanks for replying.

I'm with Kocbank. They charge a 1,80 and 0,09YTL every month, it's printed on the bank book as HESAP ISLETIM UCRETI and HESAP ISLETIM UCR respectively. If that makes sense to anyone as I don't speak Turkish yet.
thanks

Hi Anne my friend and I recently closed our accounts with Garanti, we both thought we had 20 million lire (this was deposited to open an account) to withdraw but we were told the accounts were empty the money had been taken early this year at a time when neither of us were in Turkey, the staff could not answer why this had happened.  After about 15 minutes of the staff asking various people behind the counters we were told that Garanti make a charge each year for having an account with them. Even at that there was enough in the accounts to cover the charges. TOUGH!

Thanks for that Hazel.  I wasn't aware of this so will be closing a/c and going next door to Finans when I'm over next month

Had a look at our bank book and I cannot see anything that says that or appears to be charges.

Never even thought of checking Teresa (doh)
Off to do so now though.  Can't make head nor tale of the statements I pull from the internet either lol

Got out our books and had a look.
Definately been charges on the sterling account £1.38 which is not too bad I suppose.
Can't see anything that I think looks like charges on our TL account although on checking by internet banking I've noticed that we've been charged for using ATM machine.  Probably one that wasn't Garanti.
I for one find it all difficult to fathom. It's all so different from what we're used to lol

I do agree on that, the book is very difficult to understand even with my big faithful dictionary at my side.

The one thing you do have though is internet banking which we do not, so if your charges are not too bad you might wish to think about that aspect.
