Title: Exchange Rate/ Fetihye Market
Post by: JLS1 on July 22, 2019, 15:23:59 PM
Afternoon everyone.

Is the exchange rate 6.7ish in calis at the moment with Zumrut the jewellers?? We are out for 2 weeks come 21st August and debating to buy here is Britain or over there???

Also what days is the Market in Fethiye??

And friends of ours said the prices in Marmaris has gone up and efes and meals were doubled almost trebled to previous years and was shocked. Is the same in Calis and Fethiye??

Thanks

You'll almost always get a better exchange rate in Turkey than in the UK.

Remember that it's illegal for jewellers to offer money changing. Only banks, PTTs and official change offices are legal.   ;)

Pity you didn't mention that you were looking for some. I could have done you a good deal.  ;)

I was looking at a Post Office Travel Card but (thicko that I am) I can't see the difference between that and my normal bank cards

Revolut gives you pretty much the same rate as you see on XE. Better than the change shop (and jeweller  ;) )

We used it to pay for most meals out as well as bar bills and coffee shops.

The free one lets you take £200 a month out in cash - or equivalent local currency.

Great to have in your wallet.

Hi Highlander, at the exchange shop in Calis next to mangal. Always gone there and sure I’ve read on here that if you ask nicely you can get a little bit more than what’s on the board. That’s what we do and thats the special rate.

As of today, I would be getting 7.020 on my Halifax Clarity credit card.  I intend to use it a lot whilst I’m in Turkey, as their rate is always better than I can change Stirling for.
We’ve set up a direct debit, so the full balance is paid off every month, so we’ve never paid interest.

As the mid exchange rate (XE) is only 6.73 at the moment that’s either a mistake or I would rip their hands off.

Anything near 7 at the moment is ridiculously high.

I suggest you look at Martin Lewis’s website - Travel - currency.
This is what I looked at prior to posting, and it was 7.020.  It has now gone down to 6.84.

Lindsay I just looked at that - the 6.84 card that is top says "warning - yesterdays rate". All the others todays rates and are 6.5 and under.

So looks like no better than BMB.

Why don't they offer the same rate for everyone.  ??? ??? ???

Do you withdraw lira and if so is this classified as a cash withdrawal ?

Ooh no.
On checking the terms and conditions, we found they charge interest from the day of withdrawal.
We still need cash, obviously, but most restaurants and shops are happy to take them.

Basically it's a Mastercard I think - so it will give the Mastercard rate - which is the same as Revolut and other similar cards.

However the main difference is that if you don't pay the balance off with the Halifax Credit card the interest is charged on a daily basis. That's something you don't have to worry about with Revolut or the other similar types of pre-loaded cards.

Nothing wrong with the Halifax card at all but not worth the effort of getting one for those who already have cards that use the Mastercard exchange rate really.

Pay off the cash amount the same day and you won't get charged interest.

Starling Card. Brill rate, load the card and withdraw as much as you like in lira in resort. It’s your money, no stupid £200 a month limit.

Interest on balances.

No interest to pay, it’s your money.

Return any unused pounds back to your bank account in seconds.

No brainier.
