Hi all
Looking through the posts i see information on calling Turkey.....but could somebody let me know how much it costs to phone or text a uk mobile if we take an unlocked mobile and buy a Turkish PAYG SIM whilst on holiday.( and where can i buy one and what cost?)
This summer our youngest daughter managed to run up a £700 bill on her sisters contract phone during the 2 weeks we were here. (shes got a paper round now!)
As we are back for 3 weeks next year i think pay as you go is a must (although why on earth you you want to phone england that often defeats me........didnt have 'em in my day.....ruddy kids.... :).)
Thanks in anticipation.

It costs 4 units a minute to phone home. I think It's the same to phone a mobile -if not someone will come on here & say. A text costs 3 units I believe. Approx cost per unit is 4p. That is with Turkcell.
Your phone will have to be unlocked if it's not triband around 15YTL & the sim card with 100units costs 35-40YTL if I remember correctly.
With Turkcell you will lose your number & have to repeat buying the simcard if it's not used for 6 months. Then again, to avoid a £700 bill I suppose that works out a far less costly option.

Slight correction to Lindas post, 100 units = 11.5ytl and 250 units = 23.5 ytl in Fethiye. In Hisaronu earlier in the year Mrs Smudge was with our baby who we gave a Turkish name to and needed some credits for the phone and was told 45ytl for 250 units, when asked what the babies name was she told him and he assumed that she had a Turkish Husband and the price suddenly went down to 23.5 ytl, then she told him where to stuff his phone card.

Paid 30 YTL recently for a Turkcell sim including 50 units and seemed to get a good amount of time ringing a UK land line, only thing is the credit is now finished anyone got any idea how you top up?
Thanks
-
Just take your phone to any shop that does top ups and if you ask them they'll do it for you, all you have to do is pay for however many units you want!

Thanks Val - now why didn't I think of that Doh!

Top up price (On Starcep)19 YTL for 250 Units....Guess others will be similar

When I bought my sim card (Turkcell) the guy in the shop told me that it had to be re-credited (or however you spell it) every 3 months and used every 210 days or you would lose it.
But he also told me that if I went back to the shop when I was going back to the UK who would give me a code so that I could use the phone in the UK. I would then just use it very quickly in the UK to save losing the number. So far haven't gone for that option cos I'm generally in Turkey every month or so.

I don't know about a code as when we get back to the UK it comes up on our phone as 'no service found' or something like that.
Don't know whether it matters as to what kind of phone you have or your original service? Maybe someone else can enlighten.
If anyone knows THE code - would be useful?

I'm over in Turkey next week. I'll go back to the shop and see what they say! I know what you mean about no service though so I shall query it.

We've got an Area- or Avea sim and it doesnt need regular use to stay current. We didnt use it from October to May and it was fine when we returned.
-
Can anyone bring us up to date on this please. We no longer use our Avea sim - long story! and our uk nokia phone got locked. So we have used a personal UK phone and it's cost us a fortune. this time we intend to buy another sim and use a friends spare phone(turkish)whilst there
How much will a sim card be and which SP is the cheapest? Any views?
-
:)Maria cant remember exactly, but the sim is quite cheap I got one last year and it did save me money, This year I went through £150 on my own mobile and was thinking of getting another turkish one, but cant remember if I can just put it in my own mobile, do you know, ;)

A phone with 100 credits was 140YTL, even buying new one each trip is cheaper than using UK mobile. Last year I had my UK mobile, I sent 1 text, recieved 1 text and recieved 1 phone call from friend in Turkey, cost £7.

Tansas are expecting a new delivery of mobile phones 76TL the last lot sold out completely, I am not surprised.

Approx: Turkcell 250 Kontors - 24.5YTL. Avea Kontors - 250 a llttle more but can't remember how much. I think the Turkcell sim was around 25 YTL initially with the phone already unlocked. We have a Turkish phone with Avea but use a UK phone (which gets locked every year but we bring another one and buy a new sim). It's far cheaper than using a UK phone!
-
So let me get this right- Moe do you get this too? Approximate exchange rate 2.5
A sim card with credits is around 25ytl( about £10)
You can buy a phone and sim with 100 credits for 140ytl( about £56)although if you camp outside Tansas you could get a phone for 76ytl ( c£30) and then get a sim which would take it to 100ytl - ish £40.Saving 40ytl (£16)
Ok think I'm 'on to it' now , definitely getting the sim but will see what's available in phones when we arrive as the Tansas bargains will have gone.
Very helpful all thanks!

When in Turkey, either send a text with "ULUSLARARASI" to 2222 or enter *111# on the keypad then press call to activate international roaming; or if you're out of Turkey, call 0090 212 444 0535 and if you've selected English as your "language", it should put you straight through (after you enter your number) to an English speaking customer services person.
I've personally only used *111# - and that was a long time ago - so try which ever method works/suits.

You are better off buying 500 Kontors at 62 YTL cos you also get 120 extra kontors free.

Is that a special promotion....or normal? :)
