!Just another little rule that will eventually make people think why bother with Turkey. How on earth are people to register phones if they aren't even in the country. Can anyone say whether it will be too late to register when we go there or are the sim cards defunked until you buy another new phone? Whatever I think it really stinks!- Sorry for the rant... had a bad day and all that...
-
I understand from an earlier post on the subject of mobile phones that it is going to be possible to pay the fee to register the mobile phones as and when you are in Turkey. Suggest you go into the place you got your Turkish Simcard when you next visit. :)
-
just phoned turkcell and it doesnt seem to be the case with paying the fee option seems to have been stopped. Also asked if my friends in UK could register when they return and was told no, as they have missed the date and if sim cards are used often they would automatically be stopped.
-
i know they are usefull and we have all got ourselves so used to them we cannot do without mobile phones, but its not the end of the world to do what we had to do in the old days.
walk to the phone box.
i think the phone cards are great value for money.
quite romantic walking to the old phone box hand in hand with the one you love.

Saskia - does that mean if they are only used occassionally they wont be stopped??
-
yes u are right it should say if they aren't used often they would be cut off :-\
-
We found ours was cut off last year when we hadn't used it for a few months. Not sure what the answer is here. Using your UK mobile does cost a fortune but the alternative is a minefield of red tape and even then you don't know if it will work next time you go out.
As Brummy says -- walk to the phone box with your one true love and ring home from there. Use your UK mobile for emergencies and for texting whilst in Turkey - I'm assuming UK registered phones will still work in Turkey after this law change?? Anyone know the answer?

I think there is some confusion here as there are two totally separate subjects. Firstly non use of Turkish simcards....there was always the possibilty that your simcard provider would cut you off if your phone was not activated for some time, it was luck of the draw because sometimes it was done and others not....there is nothing to suggest that this situation is not ongoing.
Secondly there is the question of registering your turkish simcarded UK phone. As previously there seems to be no firm information as yet as to what exactly is happening other than yesterday was supposed to be cut off day. My own mobile was registered and is still working. It also seems the site where you could check the registration is no longer working. I think it will be a wait and see what happens situation.
With regard to keeping your simcard open send a text say once a month to a Turkish number....very low cost and should avoid deactivation, but remember to ensure you have credit on the phone. :)

Is it just me [?] or could this be any more confusing!!!!!
Why would they want to block phones? Surely the revenue comes from call charges and credits ?? so if you buy a turkish sim card dont the turkish telecoms make money??? I know things seem to work differently but i dont understand - how does bloacking phones benefit??
-
I haven`t registered my phone and it`s still working.
I hope i don`t regret saying that.

Scunner - why did it call you Dave i thought you were a Keith [?] I think i need to go lay down somewhere my head hurts!! [?]
-
Neisha,
the reason behind this, is 40% of phones in Turkey are what they call "kacak" or smuggled hence a lot of lost revenue.
I have 2 unregistered phones and they are both working today. if they get cut off I will just go to the phone shop and register as they will be still accepting registrations aslong as you have the original receipt.
-
Neisha
I`ll put you out of your misery, only because your "team" lost to Fulham last night.
Scunner is Keith, i am Dave.
In Tottenham language, Scunners post reads, "Dave, How come when I phoned you today it said 'number is not recognised"

Hi All
I can't see what all the fuss is about. When I got redundant at Christmas my company retrieved it's mobile. So what did I do? I went out and bought one. I got a Motorolla C115 for 19 quid (Aldi) which included 5 quids worth of calls. My Turkey mobile has been in the dressing table drawer in Calis since October and if it doesn't work when I go back in May then sod the expense I'll capitulate and buy a Turkish one.
Cheers
Ken

1. I phoned you Dave.
2. It said 'number not recognised'.
3. How come.
Once they release a forum add-on for the hard of understanding my work here will be done.

I didn't phone you at all, I was trying to make you worry that your phone had been cut off, not that it appears to have worked
I paid some credits to register mine, it was all done automatically with Turkcell sending instructions by text and it seems to be fine.

Marcus, you romantic old fool! My memories of using a phonecard are A)the shops run out of phone cards,B) all the lines to England are engaged, C)you get behind someone in the queue who talks to the whole family including grandma and the budgie or D)the flaming phonebox is out of order! ;)
-
WOW - i think i understand!!! :D Both the cryptic message and i think i have to pay some credit to register my phone so my turkcell SIM works - Ill quit while im ahead and work out how another day [|)]
-
is it me or has this thread gone off topic?
not now!
-
SMS sent out to thousands of Turkcell and Avea phones tonight.
Turkcell is giving 24 hours and Avea 48 till they switch the phones of on unregistered phones.
I got the message at 6 this evening (and on a friday) and the funny thing is when I called turkcell to bitch to them they told me that my phone was registered (which I did before the december deadline).
Muppets!!
-
If you have credit on your phone does that mean they will take take credit off automically & so register you? OR do you have to do something also? Impossible from UK probably.
New Sim card on ours in May - don't know whether registered or not as assistant who sold us ours just shrugged his shoulders when asked about registration.
Plenty of credit left on phone - anyone know if we'll be OK?
Linda
-
its nothing to do with the credit (whatever that is) or your sim card but the actual phone itself.
What you need to do if your phone isnt registered is to get the original invoice (must be in your name) along with your passport stamped by customs. that is if you brought your phone from outside Turkey.
-
Starman, I have to say that you are usually 100% spot on, but not this time, my English Nokia phone is still working fine more than 24 hours after the deadline. Fingers crossed!
Rimms
-
I have since found out that it means 24 hours on a work day (apparently). Did you get the sms?

Don't know. My sister in law is in our place, was the text in English or Turkish and what did it say?
-

-
They must like me and Mrs Crabbit, our phones are still working fine.

hi all caza here excuse me for being dumb but this phone business is so ccnfusing when all this jumble is unravelled what does it all mean ? is it better to buy a phone in turkey or can you still bring you old one (or new one ) from the uk Please can someone help me to understand !! xx
-
I know the feeling Caza.
I think that you can still bring one from uk provided you have the receipt and declare it at Dalaman upon arrival, no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Anne
-
Correct Anne but make sure the receipt has your name on it and the imei number.
Australian friend had her phone cut off tonight. On the phone it says ??? ???? instead of turkcell.
Rimms the message was in Turkish and said 35826******imei no'lu cihaz kayit disi listesinde oldugu icin 24 saat icinde kullanim disi birakilacaktir. hattiniz acik kalacaktir. bilgi icin 444 0532.
-
Like I said Starman, you are usually 100% spot on, and your record still stands, our phone was cut off this morning!
Is the only solution now to buy a Turkish mobile? Does anyone know how much they cost?
Rimms
2 Nokia phones for sale !
-
if you buy a phone from the UK and bring it here, make sure you bring the original invoice in your name. Phones arent that expensive here and you can find them for less then a 100 lira.
-
We paid 180tl in July but then found out we could've got one cheaper so I guess it pays to shop around Rimms
Anne
-
i guess i will just haqve to bring my one from the uk then and see what happens after that caza xxx
-
Be careful when you buy a mobile here because it still could be locked. Make sure the books have plastic on them and that the whole thing has not been tampered with. Apparently I have learned that Izmir is where they send the phone to UNBLOCK them.
-
i've tried the website where you can check your IMEI number www.imei.tk.gov.uk to see if the mobile we use with Telsim in Turkey is registered and got this message
please could someone tell me what it means!
I'm learning Turkish, but haven't got to this bit yet ...
kayitdisi oldugu tespit edilen cihaz
don't get this message when I try it on a phone I've never used there, so maybe its good news ( although i doubt it)
any help gratefully received
