I came across some Lira which I've had since last years visit. A 20 Lira note and an older 5 million lira note. Can I still use them? or can the bank exchange them for the new Lira?

Whilst I was there I discovered if I was on my own - no, if I was with a Turk - yes..... :)

Steve if your note is 20 lira then its the new notes! The 5 million went out of circulation at the end of December so as happens here also its up to the bank if they'll change it for you.

A friend has given me a load of old lira notes probably about £120 in value. I was hoping the banks would change them when I come over. I think I read somewhere they could be changed at the bank until the end of this year but I'm not 100% sure

If you take old notes to the Ziraat Bank in Fethiye (next to Gima) they will change them for you. They are the only bank in Fethiye that can. Only Govt banks are authorised to accept them.

Hi Gang,
Please see my post back on the 27/12/2005
All old turkish lira was withdrawn from circlation on 1/1/2006 old banknotes can be converted only at the central bank or at ziraat bank in fethiye.
hope this clears up the matter

I've got a purse heaving with old lira from the last three years, would finansbank change it!
-
Finansbank, NO !!
ONLY at the Central Bank or at Ziraat Bank in Fethiye.

I have not seen any of the old notes in circulation but there are still some old coins in use.
I pass on any old coins which we sometimes get in the small shops or markets. Offer them the right change or a 50 lira note. The right change works everytime.

There are still a lot of the old notes doing the rounds in the Tuesday Market.

Thanks Kaya will go tomorrow and change them.
