Can anyone tell us anything about satelite tv arrangements in calis area. Do you have to have a satelite dish or can you get a digibox arrangement in calis ?

Welcome to the site Georgina and John.
Whatever do you need TV for in Calis ?. I look forward to getting away from it and just enjoying the sun, sand, sea and Efes  :)

I agree with your sentiments about the TV Roy but you would be surprised how many potential guests ask if you have TV in your villa--'it's for the kids you know'  Ken.

Yes i agree...  TV might be appealing for some people especially kids...

I was told that a sky digi box would work out there...  The only problem being you need at least a 3m dish and you still wouldn't see all the channels...

Maybe a better option would be buy a DVD / video recorder then you can watch what you want...

I have had digiturk now for a couple of years, subscription costs about 10.00 per month for a basic package. The dish and fitting back then cost about £50.00, i am sure the digiturk shops in fethiye will help you out.

[^] I thought that this would generate some curiosity, but there is method in the madness. It seems that the price  of digiturk is  reasonable and it certainly seems  cheaper than buying the daily paper for the news etc.  We are planning a 3-4 week break in July and our sons aged 19 and 23 may be joining us and they don't really want to be out with us all night.I think it would probably a lot cheaper to send them to the apartment to watch the telly ! Ive got a banking enquiry also in mind but that will have to come later. Thank you for all the helpful comments. Bye for now, Georgina and John.

Does anyone know if you have to enter into a years contract or can you just have it switched on and off when you are out there? Also most properties only seem to have small dishes although we have seen the odd big one.

What do you have to sign up for in order to be able to switch your staelite tv system on and off throughout the season? Do you think you can do this with subscribing to the £10 a month package?

Am I right in thinking Telmessos has its own big satellite dish, if so how does the system work? can you just plug into it or do you still need to register???

It's just there, you put your aerial lead into the wall socket and that's it.

You get BBC World and about 20 non-English channels, all in all pretty dire.

So Keith, let me get this right, are we right in thinking that once you have signed up for the basic £10 package that you only pay for the months that you are actually switched on or do you have to pay £10 a month even if you are not there?

So Pete, let me reply

I am informed that once you have been connected, you can ring and postpone the service (say from November to April). No you don't have to pay the £10 per month, that would be daft lol

Hi
I have just bought a TV with satelite "Hotbird" I am told that a "one off" payment will enable more channels. Anyone know if this is correct and if so, what extra English channels can I expect,  also would the £10 a month apply to "Hotbird" please.  Thanks   Keith

Hi,
As you know Sky Digital Package was broadcasting from only Astra Satalites 19 degree and Fethiye Region is out of coverage area.(needs 3m satalite dish)
Now Sky Digital is broadcasting also from Eurobird 1 28.5 degree( http://www.lyngsat.com/eb1.html ) and you can view  them by a 120 cm satalite dish.
Cost of 120 cm satalite dish and instalatinon is  35-40 GBP. You can bring your Sky Box and watch here.

Hi all!
My experience in Spain may cast some light on this.
I have a number of friends now resident in Spain ( and Portugal and France) who have "exported" their Sky boxes, and after having a suitable dish erected by the local artisans quite happily watch TV just as if they were in the UK. Sometimes they require the larger diameter dishes than they would in the UK.
HOWEVER... they all maintain a UK residential address as if the equipment was located there, and do not tell SKY what they have done. I understand that SKY know this happens and are not too happy about it, but so far they have not gone around the Iberian countries ripping dishes off the wall. It's dead easy to see who is doing this near, say Malaga .. just look for the large dishes facing in a different direction from those on the homes of the indigenous population!
I see no reason at all why this should not work in Calis

farmer

We have just got set up for satellite TV. The satellite man came and installed a second hand dish that I found in the loft "Star something" receiver box and cabling, all for a one off payment of 300 mtl (£111) The system receives programmes from the Hotbird Satellite. There is no subscription to pay at all.
Below is a list of most of the english channels. No movies but more than enough for people on holiday.

Cheers Big Ears

Hey Tereza Good find!:D

I have just read and printed 8 pages later for keeping in my forever growing portfolio.....

Also I have heard that ;

Cable tv (Kablolu TV) is available...

Cable tv service can be obtained from your district's telephone department general office with a written request for service (dilekce). Bills are issued monthly and can be paid by automatic bank withdrawal or at the banks listed on the bill....Over due bills are paid at the telephone office..

At present, English language channels include CNN, BBC WORLD, BBC, Teleon, Prime, MSNBC, and Eurosport.....Cine5 is a pay channel with sporting events, movies and sitcoms(some English but mainly Turkish). Channel E often has English language sit coms and movies in English with written Turkish sub titles....

If this helps....but I dont know any costs sorry...:D

Happy watching...lol...Samantha

I have a sky satellite receiver for sale, still boxed never used which I had bought for a particular restaurant owner, but since we have split up he will not be getting his hands on it now, so if anyone is interested in buying it, then email me via my profile!

OK I have 3 dishes on my roof here in istanbul. one for turksat one for hotbird and the other (120cm) for hispasat. I have a receiver which you insert a card into and the card cracks and decodes all the channels (search web for matrix magic cam). all the channels on hispasat can be changed into english if the original programme is made in english by the press of one button. I have around 40 pay per view (but dont pay) movie channels and around 90 other english channels. some sports and others ie discovery etc. I dont bother with sky as I dont fancy a 3 meter dish as it gets very windy in the winter here and I have had past experience of flying dishes both here and in the UK.
my original outlay for the equipment was around 250 pounds but then again I dont pay anything again after.

Hi Steve,

Thats very helpful, so are you saying the £250 was for the receiver the 3 dishes and the fitting?,  sounds great, would we be able to get the same in Calis?, could we use the same company if they have one in this area or do most other companies do the same deal?.

get a Turk to go with you if you dont know a satelite man and ask that you want the 'NEXT' satelite receiver that can have cards slotted into it (I paid 120 us dollars) and a cam card to decode the channels. The sat man should have a list of all channels available and from which satelite. dont forget to haggle the price down. if you pay less then 250 pounds then you got a bargain because the sat man who did mine I have known for years. dont choose hotbird as it only has bbc prime and the french multivision channels. all the rest are italian or arabic and a lot of er p0rn channels but you cant decode them. I just had hotbird fitted as I had a spare small dish and it was just there to get pointed at. you want Hispasat and another but I forgot the name.

Just a note about sky and taking the dishes out of the UK.....We lived in Germany for a while and a friend of ours brought a UK sky dish out.

If you install it yourself, you do have to have a UK address for the registration of it.  That wasnt any problem.  The problem is that if you install it yourself, you have to point it in the right direction and get it to receive properly.  Evidently, this has to be done over the phone while you are talking to the sky blokes.  He had to be on the phone to his dad, who was on the phone to sky, trying to pretend he was adjusting his dish, and not repeating the instructions on another phone.  Quite a nuisance, evidently.

It may have been some kind of special circumstance of the area which made it difficult, but it might be good to know that you may need someone at home to help you with the installation.  Of course, it may be a lot more straightforward now...this was about 15 years ago.
(gosh...so long...those dishes may be obsolete!  LOL)

LOL..that made me laugh.  I can just imagine a man on the roof phone in one hand, and the guy leaning out of the window shouting  "  Left a bit, up a bit, no left, yep now right a bit "  LOLOL

LOL Susie, it was...the way he told the story.

yildizkapisi, that was the problem...the guy took the satellite dish out of the UK then tried to install it himself.  He had no idea which way it should be pointed or how to install it....thus the phone call (from his dad in the UK to the Sky techs)....  I agree with you totally....far easier to get a satellite man *grin* and much cheaper than sky, by the sounds of it!
