I returned home yesterday and was pleased to note that Burger king has closed!!!!. Horray, no hassle from my lad for a £6 burger.
Not to be outdone though the ice cream 'shop' were selling small Snickers and Mars Bars for 11TL (for 2). Only just over £2.30 a bar!!!
Went into one of the Duty free shops and bought 3 for £1!
Hopefully the new Airport terminal will bring competition with privatisation!!

everyone knows you dont buy anything other than duty frees etc at the airports
-
Trouble is that people travelling for the first time don't and it is highway robbery when travelling with kids and you are trapped. They don't advertise this fact in the brochures.
-
I just think it is not the last memory of Turkey that you want people to leave with
-
Start up a boycott of the eating establishments.

-
I like your thinking Crabbit. Easier said than done when you have no warning of the costs and have screaming kids on your hands who are hungry!
Perhaps I should start a sandwich bar outside
-
Buy a lot of Snickers and Mars Bars from duty free, then stand in front of the ice cream shop and sell them for 5YTL for 2. 8)
-
The last time we bought any refreshments at the Airport was probably 3 years ago because of the "rip-off" factor. We now take our own. We're not tight, but we will not pay their prices. Fortunately we haven't experienced any horrendous delays. Are we tempting fate!!!
-
..makes sense!! we always do that too...
-
This has all been discussed before, the easy answer is don't buy ANYTHING in the airport, they'll soon get the message!
-
hi steve i used to have that problem screaming kid.
I do not put up with the rip off prices may buy a coffee but thats it.
Solution i have sad it many times on various sites.
Buy your drinks before you go to the airport go to marias and get your sandwiches made to order, they are excellent value and taste fantastic especially when you see the prices in the airport.
Like a lot of people we do not need to get rid of any last bits of lira because we travel 2-3 times a year to calis so the money does not need tobe thrown away.
Marias or any other sandwich maker you find i prefer the first, try it and see the difference i am sure the kids will find something on the menu to eat
-
Agreed with the don't buy at the airport but if all Forum members did this it would probably not make any difference........we are just a spit in the wind compared to the vast number of passengers who come through Dalaman. :)
-
went thru Izmir airport three weeks ago on business trip the same there burger king charging £6 for a burger so its just not dalaman for these high costs.
also went with BA from gatwick at £269 return, meal on the flight was a chicken roll and a very small bag of three slices of apple and three grapes with no entertainment on the flight, this was a "z" classed ticket so you cannot claim for airmiles you must at least have a "y" ticket to collect your miles, you can do this on the net when you book but you will pay more so there's nothing free in this world eh'

Hi tribalelder, I was suggesting that no-one at all bought anything in the airport, not just forum members, as it is such a rip off (as all airports are,) but of course that is never going to happen so prices will remain high. We never buy anything at Dalaman since being charged 8lira for a very small bottle of water. We take our own now.
-
10 lira for a tube of pringles.
The kids asked for them and Mrs Scunner said yes, I had no option :(
The idea of a forum boycott seems a start, I could get a logo done that members could add to their own websites, other forums could help (remember Jo from Holiday Truths started the campaign for winter flights into Dalaman and CBF and other sites joined in supporting).
Any further thoughts?

Go for it - maybe we can make a difference!
-
We've not bought anything from the eateries there for a number of years- take our own sarnies now. Its got to be the dearest airport ever!
Flew from Alicante a couple of times over winter and you can get lovely tapas and a beer for less that the price of a Nescafe at Dalaman. the only thing we need to get is a thermos for our tea- but I'm not schlepping one out from the UK- can you get them locally?
-
Yes Migros and loads of other shops that sell kitchen type things. Termos in Turkish. :)
-
I went full of good intentions about boycotting the food, however after a five hour delay I waivered and paid the 9YTL for a half cup of coffee and a pack of three Mars bars from duty free.
They can stuff their 28YTL for a pizza and the fact that the Kebabs do not display a price speaks, (and probrably costs), volumes.
-
get yourselves up to Gunlukbasi and buy one of those cooked chickens from the spit roast for 5YTL. Take it to Dalaman and open it in the departure lounge after borrowing a plate from the rip off cafe. Should set a few smiles off!!!!!
WW
-
dont forget to borrow the knife and fork salt , peper and a few napkins too...lol
-
WW, while you are getting your chicken, you might as well go inside the shop and get a fresh loaf and a portion of pickles then you can have a really good feed at the airport!

Hey Canalman, that really is a good idea.

I first came to Turkey in 1979, been all over, right out to Ararat. I have been around fethiye for my hols several times in the last few years but this year i'm looking for a resort that involves flights through Izmir because I refuse to end a holiday in the banditry and chaos of Dalaman airport. I can be the only person who thinks the same way.
-
Just a bit of forward planning is needed. I think you're taking things a bit too far. ALL airports have horrendous prices, not just Dalaman.
We take about 8 litres of water & soft drinks & collect 2 half bread chicken kebabs @ 2.5YTL each on the way to the pick-up (still delicious cold)plus a couple of snacks - just in case we had a delay. All carried in a roll along bag, no carrying involved.
Any drinks surplus to requirements are given away to grateful recipients or left at the airport.
If you don't want to pay the prices then a little thought means you don't have to.
In this country we do the same except we pop into a supermarket near the airport last thing buy a baguette & whatever sandwich filling we fancy. We carry a knife in the car - instant delicious rolls that would cost you £5 each or more at our airports.
You KNOW it makes sense.

I was at Antalya airport in February I was that fed up, on my own and bored that paid 18 lira for a Burger King on my credit card which was about 9 pound at the time.
The 'worker' charged 20 lira to my card, when I complained he said sign and I will give you change, couldn't be bothered to argue with someone with rubbish English so just signed it. Could have happily punched him when he gave me my change in Euros.
-
Bought a Thermos in Fethiye for about £5 . took sarnies and flask of tea nd was delighted we did when we were delayed. All you could here from people around us coming back with a cuppa snd a shmatty croisant was 'how much...'
-
I forgot to mention that after we had drunk the tea and eaten the food and were feeling quite pleased with ourselves for being self sufficient I remembered my husband (Jukebox) had to take an antibiotic which resembled a big horse tablet ! So we had to give in and buy a small bottle of water to help swallow it!
The price ??? 4.5 YTL ! Ouch. We had the cash but begrudged having to pay it !:( The same bottle in our local shop was 0.25.You do the maths on the overcharge.
-
i noticed yesterday lots of people had there own food when will the airport realise they people will not pay those prices
-
Old topic I know. But I actually like a Double Whoppa with cheese. Just sorry that in the new terminal BK is outside airside so I have to buy McDonalds after duty-free.
-

There is no accounting for tatse but it is beyond me that you can be on holiday in Turkey and enjoy the wonderful food on offer and then get into the airport to go home and queue and pay a fortune for a bit of cardboard in a bun. ;)

We stopped at the super chicken restaurant outside the prison on the Dalaman Airport road and had three half chickens, rice, bread, salad and bottled water for 17 lira (about £6.80 in total) - but obviously you need a lift up the airport or a friendly taxidriver!!
-
I also wrote a letter to the Land of Lights last year complaining about the food prices and overcharging at the old airport duty free shops - but it was never published!
-
My last outgoing flight from Dalaman was Nov 30th on KTHY flight YK965 to Stanstead. It was the only flight leaving that afternoon and half of the lights in the teminal were switched off but some 'franchises' were open. As I had my transfer from Cafe Pazar, Cathy made me a lovely beef sandwich and gave me a bottle of water so I was well catered for!. Until the operators of DLM drop the prices, the only option is to take your own food.

So it seems you are allowed to take liquids/drinks through to "airside" in Dalaman airport? I don't think you are allowed to do this in the UK all drinks are confiscated "land side" before security.
Can anyone clarify this for me?
Thanks
Lorraine

LO159 no problems with that at Dalaman, seven of us came thru in September and we had more food and drink for the kids than we had luggage, saved a small fortune, correction big fortune.
Its great seeing all the people in the know at dalaman with their Migros bags full of food.
-
I can't understand why people have to slag off Burger King, Mc Donalds etc, no i don't buy them regularly, but they are 100% quality, and you know their hygeine standards are high. I was very impressed with the MC d's on the road up to Izmir, good food, clean good service, no body smoking whilst cooking, serving or cleaning up. When we enter an establshment in Turkey, if we see staff smoking we leave immediately. Happens so often. To see a person cooking with a fag on makes me feel ill. No problem with Mc D or BK. A lot of folk get fed up with " holiday turkish food" small portion of meat fish etc. loads of chips, rice salad, grated veg. No wonder they clamour for a bit of Fast Food.
Steve.

akasya this topic is about the cost of food at dalaman airport
-
:) GUILTY, we had a Kentucky, last time we came home, because the food in the RIP lounge was sh-te.

i know it's off topic (sorry) but is there a bk in Fethiye now or was it Mc D??
-

Puma, how remiss of me, i was replying to Gorgeous - Birds posting:
" There is no accounting for tatse but it is beyond me that you can be on holiday in Turkey and enjoy the wonderful food on offer and then get into the airport to go home and queue and pay a fortune for a bit of cardboard in a bun".
I saw no reference to Dalaman Airport, the cost of food at Dalaman Airport, i was responding to the cardboard in a bun, and the wonderful food on offer quote.
As you had not objected to gorgeous - Birds post, or it's lack of compliance with the thread title, i considered it appropriate to reply in kind.
Sorry to have ruined your enjoyment of the thread with my entirely unconnnected spam. Perhaps if i changed my forum name to Lovely - Girl or something it would help.
Don't need this rubbish.
-
at cesme port the food cost are the same as at dalaman ie very high, mainly as you/we are a captive market. also noticed while searching for flights that both bodrum and anatalya are cheaper to fly to from uk than dalaman now while one is nearer the other is not.
-
I believe that they are or have now introduced the 'no liquids' rule for flights departing from Dalaman, looks like we'll soon not have any option put to pay the extortionate prices :-\
-
Came home last week through Dalaman. We had already eaten in resort so were not bothered about food. We were a party of 8 and all of us bought small bottles of water through and no-one said a word.
I had already made my mind up NOT to buy anything other that cigarettes and alcohol (which were a great price). I was most surprised at the mark up on perfumes. A bottle of Armani Code which I had paid 35GBP for at Gatwick was approx 52 GBP at Dalaman.
As for the food and drink outlets (of all descriptions) I have never seen an airport with so little trade. So let's hope the message is spreading. DON'T BUY AT DALAMAN.....pray for no delay's which may force you to purchase stuff.

I'm surprised you found the alcohol cheap, I thought the bacardi was very expensive.
-
We travelled to Dalaman via Istanbul. As we had a bit of a wait between flights, we wandered into the bar at the airport in Istanbul. The waiter found us a table and then brought us menus. (We thought it must be reasonably priced, as it was so busy in there!) Wrong - a glass of Efes was 15.5 lira!! A small bottle of water (25 kurash in Calis) was 4 lira. I refused to drink any alcohol (a killer!!) due to the price, but hubby had an Efes. What a rip-off - obviously all the airports are the same! :(
-
Last week I came from the UK via Istanbul SG airport and very surprised to find that Burgerking prices in the airport were the same as Fethiye BK. A small water was 2 lira in the airport shops.
