Whats in a name.
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:09:18 AM »
Was talking to a family over on holiday from Liverpool, and asked the question as to why the Kop at the football ground was called the Kop,unfortunately they could'nt give an answer.
Did a google search, and to simplify it spion kop refers to a steeply banked terrace, and relates to a battle at Ladysmith,South Africa,in one of the Zulu wars.I assume a large part of the British who took part in the battle came from Liverpool, and for some reason this is where the Kop comes from.
The word Scunner rang a bell,so once again a search. There's several definitions, you've also got Skunner which is Scottish. SS1 Scunner is the name of the first Russian ballistic missile system.
Geordie refers to a resident of Newcastle,or as a general term for anybody from North East of England.
I included in my search Taffy and Jock,I always assumed that Taffy for some reason  in connection with the river Taff. The term jock was only mentioned from the American definition.
I've been in contact with my Scottish relations and they can't shed any light on the subject. For some reason I missed out Scouse or Scouser.
 :)
