I would think the booking conditions at time of booking would prevail. I for one would not pay anymore but take your original booking confirmation which says 20kg with you. They will have a hard job making you pay if your tickets also say 20kg.
Contact citizens advice and get their opinion.

Dirk, I'm no expert but I would argue that a contract was made when you bought the tickets and part of that contract was the first 20kg of luggage. They will probably try and use the same loophole that allows them to retrospectively apply fuel surcharges, but do have a go at holding on to what you paid for.

There will also be a clause in the contract that says they can alter any of the conditions at any given time

So will that clause apply to both parties, for instance, I want to transfer my tickets to someone else, or the price of oil has gone from $147 a barrel to $109 a barrel so I want the surcharge refunded.... I don't think so. Surely a contract is made equally between TWO parties. We are just too soft in this country when it comes to this sort of thing.

I had a similar experience with Thomas Cook last year. When we booked it was 20kg baggage, 3 weeks later they altered it to 15kg. I took the 20kg (prepared to stand my ground) and nothing was said. It was printed 20kg on my tickets. I still say the contract stands as of time of booking but best take advice..but argue the point politely as a long cue building up will frustrate them  ;): :)

Dirk,

you must have booked a while ago - the 15Kg has been standard for some time.

I booked a package holiday from 19 September in Calis in August this year, the carrier being XL,I received my tickets which show weight allowances of 20Kg per person.
I contacted the travel agent I used and asked about any reduction in weight allowances and was told that there was no notification of any changes from XL.
The agent also told me that the 20 kg allowance formed part of their contract with XL and they could not see how it could be changed.
Perhaps XL can alter the allowance on flight only sales if this applies to Dirk.

I would be more worried about XL going bust, if you read moneysavingexpert.com.
