Be careful when buying second hand.
« on: September 08, 2009, 22:08:06 PM »
I have met someone who has had a really expensive time sorting out the problems from buying a second hand motor bike.He went to tax it and the problems started.  He did not pay too much for the bike but the person from whom he bought it did not notify the authorities of the sale so both parties were fined. He had to pay a tracing service to find the person who sold it as he would be expected to pay both lots of fines if they could not find him.The bike had to be re- registered as he is not Turkish and needed European registration. He also had to pay for a translator and another fine as the bike was not taxed for six months as it had been off the road in a garage whilst he returned to England. The final amount came to around 500 lira.I would be very careful when buying a second hand car or motorbike.

He did not buy it properly then.  When you buy a second hand vehicle (motorbike or car) both party's have to go to a notaires office to legally transfer it over(the buyer foots the bill for this)  Once there, the seller has to produce a certificate from the tax office that there are no outstanding fines etc on the vehicle (if there were the seller would have to pay them to get the certificate)
Without this certificate the vehicle cannot be legally transferred. The cost of re-registering from a Turkish plate to a foreigners plate is complicated and it is best to employ a takobci (probably spelled it wrong) to do this, all Notaires offices have one nearby.  As always, do things properly and you will have no problems, try to do it on the cheap and it will cost you a lot of money.  No matter what the seller tells you, the above is how to do it legally and without any problems.

Yes I agree with you. He did not know the regulations involved  and unfortunately like a lot of people has had to pay the price for not knowing how things out here work.I have put this on the forum hoping that other people will not be caught out.  :)

Perhaps details of the regulations for buying and selling vehicles could be put on this forum  at the top of the buy / sell section? :)
