Little Packets of -What??
« on: November 25, 2011, 10:31:49 AM »
Been here over 4 years.  Sometimes I see little strips of card and cellophane with small blobs of something held in a line on the card in some local supermarkets.  Finally I asked, and was told it was (what I translated as), chewing gum.  I listened carefully as I left the shop, -no sniggering from the staff, so I assume they weren't pulling my leg.

Haven't plucked up the courage to try it though incase my translation was off.  -Don't ask me what they said, it's lost in the mists of time (about 10 minutes, in my case)..... :-\

Anyone know what it is?

I think it's that stuff I went upstairs to fetch and then couldn't remember what my errand was.

Edited because I missed out the apostrophe. I am getting worse.

Its Mastic, natural resin chewing gum, the same stuff  thats in Dondurma  (Turkish ice cream) along with Salep,
its the Mastic that makes it chewy and the Salep that stops it melting.

But I still don't know what makes dondurma so horrid. Is it the mastic or the salep?

Wished I knew, mastic  has a bland taste, never tasted Salep on its own (that i am aware off)
They probably should up the sugar content of Dondurma, that might make it nicer.
