Thank peter16 but, in light of recent events, I was rather hoping for a serious debate.

Me neither!!!
But I would definately ask for National Service in the UK to be resumed .... especially for those that have claimed unemployment benefit from youth, or those that haven't 'actively' seeked employment.... at the very least they will learn skills, as well as respect!!!!

I am against this but only because of the current culture.
Corporal punishment could feed the egos of these yobs as they could then use this infliction of pain as a measure of how "hard" they are and then compete for who can earn and tolerate the worst.

Here is 27 reasons not to bring back capital punishment
( and it is only a starting point )

People hung and later proved innocent

George Kelly
Timothy John Evans
Mahmood Hussein Mattan
Derek William Bentley

People that would have been hung
had we not repelled the death sentence

Barry george
Winston Silcott
Stefan Ivan Kiszko
Ronan Bennett
Michael Shirley
Stephen Downing
The Bridgewater Four
The Birmingham six
The guildford four
Cardiff Newsagent Three

A very short selection from a very long list.

I'm all for National Service as I'm sure it would give many of them a sense of purpose and would help them learn to respect themselves and others. I think respect is half of the problem as the schools have their hands tied and many parents don't know the meaning of the word.
