Are you buying stamps?
« on: April 16, 2012, 14:55:28 PM »
I have been buying stamps for a week now because of the increase in prices to be implemented soon.Mrs sannyrut went today to Superdrug and they are rationing them. The reasoning for buying is that I have elderly parents who communicate by post only.I think the price hike is hitting the elderly.

Think you are right sannyrut, I also have elderly parents who are worried they won't be able to afford to send cards and Christmas cards this year due to the disgraceful price hike so I'm trying to make sure they have a supply in before they go up.  For myself too!  Been going to main post offices and not had a problem getting them, just queues of people buying them! :(

Looks like hand written letters and cards will become a thing of the past, due to the price of stamps. With a first class stamp being 60p and a second class stamp costing 50p.
I will not be sending Christmas cards this year, instead I will donate the money that would have been spent on cards and stamps to the palliative care ward at our local hospital.

First class stamps to go up 30% (46p to 60p) and second class up 39% (36p to 50p). It is to encourage more people to use the post and turn their backs on email, txting, Skype, Twitter, etc. Or maybe not.

We don't use the postal service much but when you think about it you can write a letter one day and if you are lucky someone at the other end of the country can be reading it the following day (yes it still does happen on occasions). 60p doesn't seem that much really if you think about it.

What will happen though is that people/companies will just reduce or stop using the mail system. We have already been told to issue all invoices and receipts by email with immediate effect. It's my task this week to collect as many email addresses as possible. I'm sure I will get about 75-85% success and it will only be the odd person who will refuse.

Christmas will be interesting though. How many of us will stop sending cards? I bet a lot still will.

Costco sell 1st class stamps cheaper than PO I think they are 42p each and they sell them in batches of 10 books of six. Everyone was buying them, I bought 60 but a chap in front bought about 600! They sell 2nd class too but not sure of costs.
