Disabled Lone Flyer
« on: April 01, 2013, 13:35:29 PM »
Just wondered if anyone has any info or can point us in the right direction.
Since we bought our place around 7 years ago my mother and her husband have spent around 3 months throughout the summer into October in Calis. My mother is disabled and gets about on her mobility scooter which she takes on the plane with her. This has never been a problem as her husband always sorted carting the bags around and the airline staff in UK in particular were good. Its fine if you book a return flight with set dates as it is all organised.
Unfortunately her husband died recently and she will still be holidaying in Calis, firstly for 2 weeks with us,then when we leave my brother will join her for 2 weeks. When they leave she wants to stay with some friends and return in Sep or Oct and as she has done previously will book her return flight from Turkey. The problems start when she gets to Dalaman as she will have to give up the scooter and cart her own bags etc, also she cannot manage a manual wheelchair she needs to be pushed.
Does anyone know of anyone whether privately or airline that provide a service that will get safely throught Dalaman ,check in and onto the plane ?

Speak to the transfer company she is booked with and tell them that she needs wheelchair assistance, they should arrange it for her. She will need to go through the first scanner in  / with her mobility scooter, but the wheelchair will be bought to the other side - literally just as you have gone through the scanner. The staff at Dalaman are amazing and will be with her all the way. Just make sure it is arranged in advance - no wheelchair is guaranteed if no advance info / notice is given

Our limited experience after worrying about the assistance service is that it is one of the few things that Dalaman Airport does do well.  Someone to assist (push) the wheelchair, priority at the various passport desks etc.  So as the previous respondent advises, let the flight and transfer people know, and it shouldn't be a problem. Hope mum has a good stay with no worries about the airport.

My daughter ıs dısabled and comes out on her own every year and has no problems wıth assısted passage. She has flown wıth Easy Jet and Thomas Cook. Only problem ıs goıng back when you have to fınd a rep and waıt for a wheelchaır to become avaılable. Longest we have waıted ıs half an hour. We explaın to the aırport polıce what we are waıtıng for as ıt ıs only a drop off area. We park the car near the exıt ramp not where the coaches park as ıt causes problems for the passengers and staff.

Here's a link to Dalaman Airports webpage concerning their facilities for the disabled.

Airport staff are generally very helpful in instance like this and I'm sure that someone on her flight would be happy to help.  The reps are really restricted to dealing with the guests that have booked with their company so it isn't easy for them to help outwith the instructions their boss's have given them.  It's not that they don't want to help, sometimes they just can't.
