A big thank you to Ian, had a walk up Gunlukbasi today, went to the shop as you suggested, Cilan. 2 people there, couldn't speak a word of English, phoned my friend hammit and explained what I required, 5 mins later  the man turns up and speaks perfect English, took me back home removed my door and then up to his workshop in Catarharik, says you wait 10 mins, perfect new screen fitted in existing frame, 25 lira, then takes me back home and fits it for me and then back to  Gunlukbasi to continue my day, I just had to give him 30 lira towards his petrol. it makes me so mad when I meet people like this man who is so genuine and trying to make a living without trying to rip you off like some of them do in Fethiye and Calis. good day all round. ;

That is really good to know Des - very pleased and he will certainly be getting 3 or 4 more of mine to do early in the Spring.

I agree with you - it's what we loved about Turkey in the first place.

Just as an aside - I went into a textile shop in Gunlukbasi - looking for 2 pillows and there were 2 ladies sitting at the front of the shop - as I asked the price of the pillows one of the ladies shouted to the back of the shop - something like:


çabuk buraya gel -yabancı var

I know enough Turkish to know what she meant - especially with the "quickly" - now come on - that is not standard pace in Winter in Gunlukbasi and also enough to say

Ben burada yaşamak güzel bir gün var

She seemed surprised and called me back to no avail

I know where you`re going Ian, they really love it when you can convey in a little bit of their language, and yes it is very hard to learn, but in the 4 years I have been here I have picked up quite a lot, you don't really need lessons as it is a very hard language to learn. but they really love it when they see you are trying to communicate with them. once again thank you for your help. regards Des.

I had 4 cushions made at a little shop in Gunlukbasi, there was husband & wife and a small daughter in the shop when I went in to enquire about them, no English spoken, but I managed to say what I needed. She made a lovely job of them too, decent fabric casing and well filled with nylon fibre "wool", for 30TL for the 4 it was less than I'd paid for the cushion covers.

LeeGlo - that's where I went for my cushions last week - lovely people.

I stumbled on it last year when I wanted a long carpet runner we had used in the hall at our previous place cut into 3 small carpets for the landings at our new place as the carpet was very good quality and we didn't need a runner any more.

I asked how much to cut and stitch the ends and she said 4 lira - I went back expecting 4 ends stitched up x 4 lira = 16 lira - she said NO 4 lira.

I was that taken aback I gave her a decent tip and told her to buy the child some sweets

I can be quite a "giving" person in a sort of Scottish / Yorkshire type manner when the bill is only 4 lira :-)
