I am not going to disagree with the good points on the environmental damage well made by George and many others in this and other posts on CBF. However, the main reason for this work is, I believe, to do with the storm drain work completed over the last couple of years. Most of the roads around Calis and the immediate surrounds now have proper storm drains installed so that when it rains the water is cleared quickly from the roads, preventing flooding etc. the need for the storm drains is doubled by the fact that most of the area is now under concrete, e.g houses, block paved roads, paths etc. rather than fields that used to soak up the heavy rain, and reduced the risk of flooding. And the storm water drains mostly discharge into the canals, and if that water is not cleared away quickly, then we could have severe flooding around the canals. It's what you get I suppose when you move from a rural environment with flood risk, to an urban one with increased flood risk.
