The Return of Socialism
« on: October 08, 2008, 14:29:42 PM »
I can remember the bad old days when the mad dogs of Thatherite dogma declared socialism dead. I can remember the teeny-brained prats of New Labour telling us that they buried it. Now that financial capitalism has imploded, guess what. There are calls for state intervention. More regulation of the berserk tosspots whose chase for huge bonuses led them into idiotic banking. Money to bail out banks at risk. Nationalization of failed banks. This is happening not just all over Europe, even the yanks are doing it. At last people have woken up to fact that there is no such such thing as a free market - TINSTAAFM. It is just a dream of abstract economic dogmatists who wouldn't know where to find the real world if you drew them a map; or, for the rest of us, a nightmare. All markets are socially constructed and depend for their existence on regimes of regulation. These our leaders destroyed over the last 25 years.

And what is the solution? On all sides politicians and businessfolk are saying:"We all need to work together as a community to sort out this horrible mess". I remember that political philosophy. I grew up with it. it was called socialism.

And yes, much of my retirement fund is deposited with Kauthing Edge, and it is a bank that has gone into liquidation today, so I fancied A RANT. Ahhh, that's better. Going off down the pub now. The weather's very nice.
