Have you had a hard stressful day ?
« on: August 19, 2009, 18:56:41 PM »

I was driving home this evening, bemoaning the fact that I had had a stressful day at work, when an article came on the radio.

A Radio Five Live presenter was interviewing soldiers whose job it is to find a clear route through areas of Afghanistan.

These brave men talked quietly and in a matter-of-fact way of what their job entails. That is walking, sometimes at night, through areas which they know are littered with Improvised Explosive Devices.

Despite the interviewing repeatedly asking the men about how stressful their work must be, to a man they stressed that they thought "they were only doing their job"

It was quite astonishing to listen to them describing what they do day in day out. Perhaps the most amazing part of the interview was when one of the soldiers described just how close they stay to each other when carrying out their terrifying task because they are mates.

Certainly put my day into sharp perspective.

John,
I could not add to your views on the broadcast beyond saying that I agree with you completely.
Every member of our armed forces needs our total support.
They seem to be all that is left of what was thought to be British.
(A personal opinion.)

I have never been in the armed forces but have met hundreds through my job in the Fire Service, where many end up (jovial comment) when they leave the service, plus close friends.  I am always amazed, and humbled, by their sense of comradeship, devotion to duty, friendship, loyalty and sense of perspectives.  They are a breed unto themselves and a cut above the rest.  Thanks to them we sleep easy at night.
