Kilts were invented by the Irish. The word 'kilt' is Danish.   :o

There is a widespread belief that persists nowadays of the kilt being the traditional and ancient dress in Ireland, and only later introduced into Scotland.  Let me say that no evidence of any kind can be found in the early Irish records to support this.

From http://www.albanach.org/kilt.html

The word is from Scandinavian origin, what with them Vikings popping over and that.
