One of our cards allows us to withdraw 1,000 TL per day, and we've had no problem obtaining that in 50s or 100s, BUT if the ATM is only dispensing 20s or 10s, the slot isn't thick enough for the money to come out so it reduces the available amount to 400 TL per transaction.

I guess they were lucky they only had £1000 in it then. Not joking - it could gave been much worse had they had more in their account.

Moral - make sure you go into an enclosed cash machine and watch out for anyone who gets too close.

We met this couple on the day they were returning home to the UK and they were very upset with their 1st trip to Turkey.We did try to convince them that they had been very unlucky and that it's a lot safer here than at home and to give it another try.They explained that they'd gone to the ATM about 11:50pm and noticed a man stood to the right of them obviously now with hindsight, clocking their PIN.To the left was another who distracted them by appearing to be trying to help them with the Turkish symbols,when the card and cash came out they snatched both and shot off.It all happened so fast they were both shocked and the young girl,to make it worse, was heavily pregnant.It get's even worse,at about 12:15am the gang knowing the PIN drew another sum of cash,altogether it was £600. they only found this out later when they cancelled the card

It is sad to read for sure. One thing I don't do when visiting a country for the first time is use the ATM at ten to midnight and even if I did I would be so on guard that nobody to the right of me would be clocking my pin. Again I don't want to be unsympathetic but...etc...
