I don't do this now, but when i was living in the U.K i was so guilty of throwing away food. I would open a large pack of bacon, eat 2 rashers and leave it in the fridge.Same with cheese, one butty and the rest wasted.(usually found 1 week later, when cleaning out the fridge).Ready meals, which looked so appetising when shopping, left uneaten in the fridge. Also, not rotating canned goods in the cupboards, so finding  tins of beans etc 12 months out of date.
Anyone else guilty?

Not quite THAT bad but I was guilty of buying too many veggies (or salad), only to find them yellowing or (worse) turning slimy in bottom of fridge or veg basket.  I am not as bad now because I plan things better now I am not being pulled in as many directions.  But yes, a terrible waste.

But what bothers me are those people who throw out food as soon as it gets within sniffing distance of the 'Best before' date.

I used to work for a large-ish supermarket chain in Yorkshire and when bacon/meat was getting close to it's sell by date the packs were opened and the bacon/meat given the smell/colour test to see if it was still fit to eat. It was then passed over to the deli to be sold over the counter - or thrown away if it was unfit.

Nothing wrong with the food at all but not as 'fresh' as the customer would expect. A bit naughty I suppose. If we had lots to shift we would also cook some bacon in the canteen and let the smell drift through the shop early morning. Amazing how much we shifted when we did that  :)

I guess this might still go on in some stores but then again why should perfectly fit to eat food be binned because of a date?

I was guilty of this whilst still working.  I did the food shop on a Friday night and always bought what I 'thought' I needed.  Needless to say loads of it was binned each and every week.
Now, being at home all day I've much more time to sort out our meals and my shopping so there is less waste.
One thing I will say though.  I don't remember my Gran throwing out anything, everything was used and there were no sell by dates.  If it smelt and looked fine it got used!
We've been brainwashed into this 'sell by/use by' regime which is shameful really with so many starving in the world.
