Syrian Refugees
« on: July 05, 2012, 19:17:43 PM »
Apologies, didnt know what section to put this in, Turkish Tales didnt seem appropiate. We were on Gemiler Beach today and there was Jandarma presence, a speed boat came up to the beach and a dozen Syrian Refugees, men women and children came ashore. A poor little boy about 7 couldnt get his land legs and I thought he was going to fall in the sea. They basically had what they stood up in. The speedboat went off and bought another lot back. So we hear they had been dropped off on th...e uninhabitated St Nicholas Island and had been there all night. They was told it was Italy. They were so frightened, the Jandarma laid their guns down and gave them water and tea. They probably sold everything to get here. They are safe now and free of war, we said we dont know we are born and cant imagine the trauma they have been suffering

How sad. What will they're treatment be here. Do they get deported or are they looked after by the Government or does the Red Crescent help them? I would love to know.

Turkey has a sensational history for providing a safe haven to refugees fleeing from many countries. Glad to see it still offers this.

It was sureal sitting in such beautiful surroundings and seeing people so desperate as ro leave their homes with their children and all they stood up in. It was very very moving to see them. The man in the boat who did the 2 trips to collect them and the Jandarma were very kind to them which was good to see. We should all count our blessings.

Posts like this do restore your faith in humanity.  Imagine yourself with your chldren, selling everything up and dumped on a deserted island.  Found and taken to a beach confronted by police with guns which they then put down.  Brought tears to my eyes at the thought.  Well done Turkey!!

We were wondering in they would be sent to the Turkish/Syrian border where "tent city" is but was told their were camps a lot nearer.  They will probably get much comfort being with others of their own nationally and who have been through the same.

Is there a charity where we can donate to help these poor people? I spent many
years working with Syrian people, Moslem and Christian and found them
honest, hard working and decent people.  I so hope they can one day go home to a
free country but I fear the "tribal" and "secular" divides will see anopther Iraq!
