It certainly does make something I thought would be extremely complicated sound quite straightforward. I hope to see Budapest anyway so this could actually kill two birds with one stone, plus some other bonuses en route. I just wonder how complicated it might be, getting to all these railways stations at the right time and finding the right train - I used to struggle at Euston :D

This one got me thinking too.  It would be great for us to fly from Southampton, obviously not direct.  I have looked at flights from other countries all going to Dalaman, having just had a quick look at prices I was surprised to find that it is much much less expensive to fly direct from  UK than any other country.
Back to the drawing board.

Loz, we are 30 minutes from Southampton airport, when you work out the prices and a good route could you post your findings on here please!
Thanks

Yes that's what I found too Loz - I started taking an interest in the Dalaman arrivals page to see where the planes were coming in from but it doesn't seem viable. My ideal non-direct plan was to fly to Venice for a couple of days then get a ferry or cruise from Venice to somewhere not far from Fethiye. Sadly the Venice to Turkey ferries seem long since deleted.

It took us about 9 nights once we left Paris.   We spent 4 nights on the train.  The booking was straight forward.
