In Praise of Literacy

And literacy from an unexpected source - but that might be just my prejudice.

This is "breaking news" so maybe not precisely accurate. A Birmingham man went to a supermarket and parked in a "Disabled" space. He left his car there. When he came back "The Authorities" had lifted the car onto a low loader. It appears he then climbed up, got into his car and refused to leave. This meant, due to Health & Safety, it couldn't be moved until he had got out. So far he has been sitting there for six hours. He accepts he was wrongly parked. He accepts he has been served with the appropriate fine. But, he alleges,  the attempted removal was too soon after it had been left. It is a matter of principle ("A Matter of Principle" is the standard defense for an otherwise utterly irrational and indefensible action).

Where is the "literacy" relevance? A couple of listeners texted BBC Radio 5. One supported the Birmingham man's "Stand against jobsworth council workers". The other said "I hope they leave him there. That'll be one less idiot on the roads over Christmas". Then the football correspondent arrived on the programme, and before beginning his Premier League briefing, asked "Shouldn't that be 'One fewer idiot'?". Whoopee! Hooray! Rah, rah! It's Christmas.
