Spot on KKOB you've certainly hit the nail on the head. I/We never go near them now after lessons learned. They could probably use all these assistants who have to come and help out to go back on original check outs.

We decided to use one in M.&.S for a couple of items.  We got behind a man who was having so much trouble using the check-out.  He kept banging the screen with his finger.   He then look around at us in desperation.   Phil asked him what was wrong and in a thick Russian accent the guy said he was trying to press the screen to say he had a bag, but it was not working.   Phil, stepped forward, pressed the screen and it worked.
The Russian guy was very grateful and thanked us.
Question... Do these machines not work with Russian fingers ??

More likely the Royal touch helped.
