I lost my gold watch in Istanbul while out shopping.  I informed  our Hotel and one of the staff told me I needed to make  out a Police report.  We were taken to the Police Station by one of the Staff and I had to take my passport.  We were taken into an office and where there for about 30 minutes while the policeman typed out all the details including my parents full names....  I was given about 6 forms to sign and one was given back to me as my copy for the Insurance Company.  I was really glad the member of staff was with us as it was a complicated procedure.
I was asked for this report by my Insurance Company and did receive payment for the watch.
I would suggest you contact whoever you were staying with and ask them if they could inform the Police, however, I should image the Police might need you there in person  with your passport.
If you might have lost it on the plane coming home, then you could inform the carrier and take it from there, it would be a better chance of you getting your money back if this was the case... Keep all your travel documents, the Insurance Company will need them, also if you don't have a receipt for the ring, the Insurance Company will accept photographs of you wearing it as evidence.
If you need any more information let me know.
Good Luck
Jacqui.

Hi Bee, Anything that's of value that is lost must be reported to the police.. I think if it was handed in the police would get it back to you, but the main reason is people put in false claims so the Insurance Companies now insist on Police reports.  I know this because of having a friend in the force, even if you loose something in the U.K. you will need a Police Report Number to claim.
I hope some of the residents in Fethiye on the Forum might be able to give you some advise about your ring, perhaps if you did loose it on a boat, you could contact the owners?
Jacqui.

Hi all, I have tried to contact fethiye police station without any luck, I know you must think i was a little stupid not informing the police, but I have never claimed before and thought police were to be informed if there was a crime, and even fraudulent claimants can easily inform the police to make there claim seem valid, can anyone help with contact numbers for the police, preferable English speaking, our friends are over this weekend could they do anything while over, thanx.Bee
