Turkish carpets bought in Turkey, even the new ones, unless they are the nylon variety (which many are) are expensive. However, you are paying for a hand crafted item which will last many life times. It like everything else, buy it where it's produced and in most cases it's more expensive, because you are competing with all the tourists, but away from the source it can be much cheaper. Carpets are a mine field for the novice buyer and I would advise if you don't know about carpets, do some research before you buy. Saw an ex pat recently who paid £3,500 for a carpet which he thought was an old one and sold it to a U.K. dealer for £320 (not me). Another point is anything posted to the U.K. that is over £15.00 in value will be subject to customs duty.
