Sunday's Car Boot was the biggest ever

Well it appears that lots of people have already given their views as to the benefits of the Car Boot to the local community. Thank you all very much for your support.

If ECL cared to look around the boot sale she would see that 80% of the sellers are Turkish families trying to make a few lira and at least 80% of the buyers are also Turkish.  If she was there early in the morning she would see truckloads of Turkish families arriving as early as 6.00 am waiting for the stalls to set up. Many of these are from the poorer area of Gunlukbasi, Catalarik and outlying villages and they are there to buy secondhand clothes and shoes and pick up other bargains that they would not normally be able to afford. Many of these Turkish sellers and buyers would not be able to attend if it was held on another day.

To put it in perspective we have 8 car boots in a year  - that is 8 Sundays out of 52 - and they are usually finished by 1.30 which gives everyone time to do their normal shopping afterwards.

The Carnival Committee have always been very sensitive with regard to the Calis Sunday market traders and we try very hard to exclude commercial traders from the car boot sale so that we are not encroaching on their territory. We are not in competition with them, we do not want new clothes stalls, shoe stalls etc.  Goods sold at the boots are mainly secondhand, unwanted or handmade. Occasionally a trader will turn up but we then call the Zabita to get them removed (as happened this Sunday).

Also the car boots are attracting people from as far away as Marmaris, Kas and Kalkan (ok these are mainly ex-pats and they usually turn up later in the morning) who come for the day out so this has to be good for the town too as it is bringing in money and all of these people have the chance to go to the main market and shop there as well.

The sale is also providing a chance for various charity stalls to raise money for good causes. Animal Aid raise lots of money for helping the animals, the Turkish charity Mavi Kus raise money for poor people in the villages and the carnival committee raise money for disadvantaged children to name but a few.

The car boot sale may be a British import but I'd say it is a very Turkish Affair!

Many if not the majority of sellers are Turkish and the majority of those coming to buy are definitly Turkish.

It is an opportunity for many to buy things they couldn't perhaps otherwise afford.

Flea Markets have a long tradition in Turkey too - maybe the modern day car boot is just another flea market.

What ever else it is it's also a nice social occasion, creates an opportunity to catch up with friends and I for one love the chance to pick up some home made chutney (cherry and cucumber thank you pies and cakes or is it cakes and pie lady who has a shop in Calis)and pickled onions and sausage rolls.

Only thing is I do think it's a shame we aren't allowed on the promenade any more; I don't know why not! Does anyone [?]

Why is everyone so defensive, I was at both on Sunday, my mere observation was, that the Sunday market traders could suffer - where in my post did I say, 'stop the Car Boot'.
Don't be too quick to judge, or shoot others down in flames, for having, (what they think) is a valid comment, and who do not have to broadcast "their" help in the community.

Our local market is Patlancik on A Saturday. This one is always very busy and this week was no exception. Most of the stallholders there are also at Calis on a Sunday and we most of the English that we meet there are from Calis areas. Maybe this is due to the prices on Calis Market being more expensive? One of the cafe owners told me that he charges more at Calis because there are more tourists at that one and they can afford it.

That simply isn't true. You said the sunday market traders are suffering, that the boot fair was inflicting "Little Britain" on the area and that it should be moved to a different day of the week to preserve "local tradition".

The responses (particularly from those directly involved in the fundraising) show clearly that THIS is the big new "local tradition" with the Turks, duck pies or not.

You further took pleasure and amusement in "ruffling feathers" which is a childish way to enjoy a community forum. If you want to stir up trouble for your own amusement you can stay away.

I also know (as mercury points out) that the very same market traders that attend the Calis sunday market are at a number of others. In Koycegiz, for example, they charge 15-20% less for fruit and veg on average than at Calis. If they were to take their 20% CALIS SURCHARGE on local people of all nationalities and pocket half and give half to the local causes being helped by the car boot sale and other events I might share your sympathy and concern for them. As they hike their prices on Sundays to line own their pockets, b*ll*cks to them lol
