It's not just different airlines, I do different airports too.
Last year I got really cheap flights going out from Glasgow, and another really cheap flight coming back to Manchester. The only problem with such arrangements is you can't use your own car to get to the airport as you won't be returning there but in this particular case I spent £28 (train x4 to Glasgow), £68 hotel at Glasgow aiport (it was a 5am check in), £84 (rental car collecting at Manchester Airport, dropping back at my local branch), £38 diesel.
£28 + £68 + £84 + £38 = £218
Saving by choosing 2 different airports £122, x 4 = £488
£488 - £218 =
