Had a really nice day out yesterday, we decided to pay a visit to t George's hall in Liverpool where they had uncovered the world famous Minton tile floor.
The floor is both spectacular and an enigma! made up of 30,000 hand crafted Minton floor tiles laid in a very intracate pattern (see below)it was noticed only 2 years after the building was opened in 1854 that the floor was starting to mark and would have to be covered up for protection, so we are left with one of the most spectacular buildings in Western Europe almost unusable.
After the turn of the century, the floor was kept permanently covered for 40 years. Now from time to time they take off the covers and the floor is now on show until 21st of this month, if you get the chance, go and have a look and if you do, try and go at either 11.00am or 2pm where you can enjoy a talk on the hall from Steve Binns, a local historian and tour guide who has been blind from birth, he is a fascinating man.
