"Dolphinarium plans create major protest"
« Reply #600 on: June 02, 2010, 16:55:58 PM »
Handed in the letters regarding the Animal Protection Bill to the Kaymakam today.

Figure if he can turn away water tankers he might just have the Dolphins turned away too.

Have amended the Vali changes for Mugla and added the Antalya one as well as they will be responsible for the transportation license. At least Dr Altiparmak knows what is going on... can't get away from us that easily  ;)

Spoke to this environment organisation (TEMA) today who we 'happened across' last week.

They want to take the case to court. They have a lawyer who would volunteer but there would be expenses for the paperwork and applications.

They also want to organise a legal protest.

Also the WWF sent through a bit of info yesterday too.

"Hisaronu is located in Fethiye-Gocek Specially Protected Area and SPA Authority did not give a permission for dolphinarium in Hisaronu.

Legal issues need some time but we belive that they will cancel this activity in Hisaronu. As WWF Turkey, we are trying to establish a new expert platform for preparing a strong document as a database for legal documents.

Dolphinarium problem is not spesific for Hisaronu. We should stop it at national level".

Suggested to TEMA today they should work together and share the costs of legal action but got the impression that wasn't going to happen.

So, am I reading this correctly?  If we can get enough funds together and contribute/pay for the costs then TEMA would take it to Court?  At least they have a volunteer lawyer.
Does Hisaronou Baskan know he needed permission from the SPA Authority (or was that something just brushed under the carpet)?

I received this reply from John Sellars (which was kind of him)  Don't know if it helps re: the transportation issue?

Sorry, its not my area of activities.

This link will take you to the CITES authorities in Turkey but I don't know if they deal with such matters:

Have written to TEMA and asked them for a comprehensive breakdown of the costs associated with submission of the legal paperwork and information on how this will be managed.

Consumed as I have been in the flurry of activity surrounding this issue, I almost missed the important point of people power. The work that individuals have done here and the support that has been afforded them from the various quarters really is amazing. If anyone ever questioned democracy and the power of the few, they ought to think again. A massive well done to everyone and and even bigger one to the driving forces (we all know who you are.

Its quite interesting to hear this as I was talking to someone the other night and she said they arrived in Hisaronu and to start with everywhere she went she launched into a how terrible that they are building a dolphin park here etc and was amazed how few people seemed to kmow it was happening let alone about the campaign being waged.

It is good to hear that the posters are going up and hopefully these will spark discussions are spread awareness. In the meantime we can all tell our friends and their friends and talk to bar and restaurant staff. The more opposition to it on the ground means the less chance in the event it does open that it will be used enough to stay viable.

Anyone who needs posters - this can be arranged just drop a line here ... a poster for the car or the info pack for visitors or your local bar or restaurant. It can be arranged or we can tell you where to pick up a few to distribute.
