Silly question time (AGAIN).

I booked our daughter-in-law's flight in her married name without realising that she has not yet changed her passport.

I therefore have to change the name on the booking.

I suppose there is no way of avoiding the scandalous charge.

But more importantly..my daughter in law has a middle name. It says you have to have the exact name on the passport, but the Form only says first and last names

Is it acceptable just to enter her first and second names when changing the name.

I think I have read this right Highlander if you are asking does the booking form has to show both Christian names and Surname my own experience is I have two Christian  names both of these are shown on my passport but in all my travels I have only ever booked using my first Christian name and have never encountered any problems, if I have had a senior moment and read this wrong then please just ignore me.  ;)

Change the passport???

Taken from passport website:

If you have changed your name or are about to
If you recently changed your name or plan to do so in the near future, you will have to change the name on your passport. If you don't, you may be unable to travel abroad.

When you apply to change your name, your current passport will be cancelled and a new standard ten-year passport issued. The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) will credit your passport with extra time (up to a maximum of nine months) to cover any time left on your old passport.

Friar tuck - thanks that's what I thought - that it does matter how many names you have, you only need enter your first and last names. Bet HRH Prince Charles is happy about that ;).

Heather - £ 80 to change the passport:(

Heather - also from the website

If you plan to change your name when you get married or form a civil partnership
Deciding whether to change your name before or after the ceremony
You should think carefully about whether to change the name on your passport before the ceremony or wait until you have returned from a foreign trip.
This is because the name on your passport should match the name in which you booked your travel. Even if you carry your marriage or civil partnership certificate with you, if the name on your passport does not match the booking:
some countries may not let you in
some travel companies may not let you board their flights
You should check with your travel agent or the consulate of the country you plan to visit.
IPS can change the name on your passport up to three months before the ceremony. They will cancel your old passport and issue you a new one. But the new passport is 'postdated'. This means you cannot use it before the day of the ceremony. Some countries will not issue visas for postdated passports. You should check with the consulate of the country concerned.

I read that as you are not legally obliged to change the name on your passport when you get married.

Views welcome.

hubblebubble - I don't think I've got a spare 45 minutes to be on hold ;)

I would read that as, if you change your name after marraige that is the one which you  are known by and the one which should be on your passport.

How will it affect travel insurance if names are not right?

You dont have to change the name on your passport on marriage (or bank account etc) I work with many professional woman who keep their maiden name - but you do have to book the tickets in the name on the passport  :)

Many thanks Val that's crystal clear and helpful.

I didn't think that you had to change the name on the passport and I realise now that I should have booked the tickets using Rae's maiden name.

Thanks again. :)

No, you don't have to change the name on a passport.  What happens to people when they married abroad, fly in with one name, fly out with another?
